Hello everyone, This fall I rescued a mother (Spot) and her little boy (Beeba). They were ferral cats but they were coming along real well. Well, two days ago, spot developed Chyle (pronounced Kile) and had to be euthanized. Not only are we heartbroken, but Beeba is acting strange. He is off his food, calls for her in the night, and spends most of the day hiding in his linen closet. He is probably 60% tamed. I can rub his belly first thing in the morning and he and Spot usually would spend the evenings with my husband and I in the living room. Spot was more tame than him. I hear him crying for her in the night and I don't have the heart to let it go on, so I get up and let him out of the spare bedroom and keep him company for the rest of the night in the living room playing with string etc. We kept them in the spare room only overnight, otherwise they have the run of the house. I know he is suffering the loss too, they were so close. Any ideas on what I can do to help my little guy? One thing we are going to do is let him stay out at night. That might keep him occupied looking out all the windows and exploring the house. Thanks for any info you might have. Shannon C. Beeba's Mom

I am sorry you lost Spot. Beebe is just missing his Momma. He just needs time to grieve. He'll come around. This sounds weird but, Have you told him his Momma is gone.

I agree with sitting down and telling Beeba that his mother is gone. It may seem strange but it does seem to help them. I did this with a friend's cat when his playmate passed away and she told he was running around the house meowing looking for him. I also did this with my cats when one of my cats passed away during treatment at the vets office. Also just try to give Bebba as much attention and playtime as you can. As mentioned he is also grieving in his own way.

Thanks so very much for the suggestions of telling Beeba about mom. This evening while I am playing "string" with him, I'll tell him. I know it sounds funny, but who really knows in the great scheme of things what an animal senses and understands from its human. Its a cold raw day here in western New York. Matches the weather in my heart. Thanks for a little warmth. Shannon and Beeba

The last couple of nights, Beeba has had the run of the house all night. He seems happier than being in his bedroom. I just didn't want him jumping up on the gas stove while we were sleeping. Put up a cat alarm. All seems to be going well. Thanks for your support during this stressful week. Shannon

I am glad bebba is feeling better. Hopefully things will continue to improve for both of you. Hugs to both you and bebba.
