I finally broke down and took him to the doctor today. On Saturday he started running a fever, and it hovered around 101, but on Sunday evening it got up to 103. Just a moderate fever and I wasn't too worried about it, since I asked him over and over again if anything hurt (like his throat or something), but the only thing he complained about was a headache. The fever broke yesterday and has been normal since, but yesterday he also started complaining about a sore throat and developed a pretty nasty cough. According to him, it is like someone is stabbing him every time he swallows. So I took him in. Poor kid has Influenza, but there really wasn't much I could have done for him, or much the doctor can do for him, anyway.
I just can't decide if I should send him back to school or not. His doctor said if he is feeling better he can go back tomorrow. I don't see that happening, but still. At the hospital I worked at, there was a breakout of Influenza in the hospital, so anyone with symptoms was forced out of work and had to stay out for at least 5 days, and couldn't return until you felt A LOT better. Some tailing symptoms were still allowed, but you had to wear a mask until all symptoms were gone. I guess I'm answering my own question, but I don't want to take the risk of DS getting anyone sick since he won't be forced to wear a mask (I had to threaten him to wear one just on the way out of the doctor's office) and I know he still feels like crap. The doctor did give us an absence note, but I still feel like a bad parent keeping him out of school. LOL
