States facing financial difficulties

We all know about California's budget woes: not paying residents tax refunds, cutting work hours for State employees, cutting funding for State programs.

Here's Kansas adding itself to the lineup.

Kansas has suspended income tax refunds and may not be able to pay employees on time, the state's budget director said Monday.

The state doesn't have enough money in its main bank account to pay its bills, prompting Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to suggest transferring $225 million from other accounts throughout state government. But the move required approval from legislative leaders, and the GOP refused Monday.

Budget Director Duane Goossen said that without the money, he's not sure the state can meet its payroll. State employees are due to be paid again Friday.

Goossen said the state stopped processing income tax refunds last week

Looks like they've got some ongoing financial issues.

What's the state of your State?

Looks like NC is underfunded somewhat, but not nearly as bad as a lot of other States. Haven't really heard of any measures being taken so far as a result.

So far, no layoffs of state employees in Kentucky. But, quite a few services have be cut. A mega-busy public health facility in Louisville was just shut completely down. About half the states public defenders have been cut (but most of them have their own law practices). Most highway and University projects are on hold, if not canceled outright. The Governor just signed a bill last week increasing Alcohol and Tobacco taxes to try to increase income. The worst is not doubt yet to come, as this year looks like over 400 million in revenue shortfalls

Kansas is my state and thanks for posting that. I usually have to pay state income tax on April 15th so guess I'm not affected about suspended income tax refunds. The job layoffs are pretty bad in this area. Like every where else in the country, people have stopped shopping. House sales are down. Foreclosures are up. Kansas tax income is way down right now, of course the state is suffering.

We need jobs to boost the economy again. Tax credits are not going to help in the short term.
