I'm currently reading "The Gargoyle." It's written by a local writer. Fabulous book!

http://www.randomhouse.ca/catalog/di...=9780307356772

What's the best thing that could happen to a guy who is completely obsessed with his looks? He lives out a fantasy and becomes a porno star.

What's the worse thing that could happen to him? He becomes severely disfigured in a fire.

That's how this book starts. A vain, handsome guy in an accident that results in him being severely burned.

The rest of the book is about his recovery and his reflection on his life before he was burned.

A mysterious woman comes to his bed side and spins wild tales about having lived 700 years and them being kindered spirits/lovers who are destined to meet and love over and over again. The only catch is that when he first meets her she's a patient in the psychiatric ward of the hospital.

Is what she is telling him true or only a manifestation of her psychosis? Even he begins to wonder as she tells him the tales of his past lives.

Our daughter had it and wanted me to read it. I tried, but I just couldn't get into it at all.

You should give it another go. I find that sometimes if I can't get into a book that if I give it a rest and try again, I'll ultimately end up enjoying it. I was like that with the Lord of the Rings novels. I absolutely hated them at first, and then when I had nothing else to read around here I started to read them and now they are my favourite books. In fact I've read each dozens of times and seriously need to go and replace them because the covers are all ripped off and pages are falling out because of broken spines.

After reading your original post I decided to try again. My daughter says it's a good book so she is going to look for it and bring it over for me so I can give it another go! I'll let you know how it goes.

I think I'm going to give up on my Jodi Picoult book and I've hired the Gargoyle. I'll pick it up sometime next week (it's reserved, currently).

Life's too short to read bad books

Isn't that the truth!
I just finished reading Kathy Reichs' latest called "Devil Bones." Wow! I usually enjoy her books, but this one was super boring. I found myself quickly skimming over full pages to see if there was anything worth reading on them.

Another book that left me feeling awful was "The Devil Wears Prada." I thought that was a waste of trees! The writing was awful and it was "manic." So not my expectation in a book. I read a book to feel good, not like I need a Valium at the end!

You're welcome! Glad you are enjoying it. I've found some excellent reads on this site because people have mentioned what they are reading.

My next book to read is called "Picking Cotton." It's a true story about a young woman who identifies her rapist in a police lineup. Only to find out 11 years later that she was wrong and it wasn't him. He is ultimately set free and they forge a friendship.

I normally enjoy Kathy's books too I bought one 2 years ago and couldn't get past the first page. It's just sitting in my room!

IMO The Devil Wears Prada is an awful movie so I wouldn't even try and read the book.

Picking good sounds awesome too! I'll have to add that to my list.

I'm still waiting for the Gargoyle
and I've just placed a reserve on the Boy in Striped Pyjamas and I'm 27th on the reserve list. LOL!

Thanks for the reccomendation. I think if I didn't have so much on my mind with study it would have been easier. I've got to admit though I loved some of the "stories" within the story though - they were great!

I've only got a really small brain!
