I know that Tylonol is lethal to cats, Is there anything that can be given to sick cats with Fever and sore throats and stuff??

My two cats are sick and someone told me to give them baby aspirin... I think that would kill them, am I right???

Hello,

Whoever gave you this advise was very wrong! Please, do not EVER take advice from anyone *other than* a VET with regards to giving ANY kind of medication to a pet; to do otherwise can be life threatening.

Cats break down Aspirin in their bodies very very very slowly and can suffer serious TOXIC (and fatal) effects if given it UNLESS under the direction of a Vet.

Here is a link that explains this.

http://www.cat-world.com.au/AspirinPoisoning.htm

Please, if you have 2 sick cats with fever and other symptoms you must get them to a Vet, you can't treat this yourself. Fever is the sign of either a bacterial or viral infection. Cats dehydrate easily when they have a fever.

Please, have them seen ASAP tomorrow to be properly assessed by a Vet.

The safest thing is to follow this advice:
Do not administer aspirin to pets unless instructed to do so by a veterinarian. Keep bottles of aspirin out of your pet's reach, including bottles kept in purses or pocketbooks.

For fever and sore throat your vet will prescribe an antibiotic, so please have your kitties seen as soon as possible.

Levi is under vets care right now for a URI. Samantha has just gotten sick.. I was NOT going to give them aspirin.

The vet told me for my cat that just passed away to give him childrens cough medicine, one that DOESN"T have tylonol in it..

Have you ever tried to give a cat grape flavored ANYTHING?? It was interesting....

Children's cough medicine? I've never heard of cats being able to have children's cough medicine -- what type? Seems a little strange to me, cats generally don't cough like humans do so not sure why your Vet suggested that?

The vet told me to give my OTHER cat cough meds DELSYM childrens because he had a TERRIBLE hacking fur ball cough. This was for Tom, not either of my live kitties
He was also on Albuterol nebulizer treatments.
Being a Respiratory Therapist for HUMANS, that was right up my alley

I am at a loss. I don't know how to help Samantha. I can't get her to the vet until tomorrow. The ER vet is almost 200 bucks to walk in the door.

She IS mouth breathing and has a fever, I DON'T know how high her temp is right now.

I will do the bathroom steam thing with her.

Are there any cooling measures used for cats other than stuff that is done AT the vet??

Can you take her temperature? You should if you want to do something about the fever. You have to know what you're dealing with.

Cold compresses work wonders for bringing down temperature, but one must be careful not to overcool the cat.

Try cold compresses for 10-15 minutes, see if they make her feel a little better. Cold compresses, NOT ice packs!

no, but i have had to administer banana flavored stuff, as well as a maple-flavored med.
i don't know why they don't make these things in fish or chicken flavors - i bet someone could make some major
by offering them that way.

I have put alcohol on her pads and taken a wet sock and placed her feet on this for 15 min. Then I let her rest. This seems to be just enough to get her mad enough to take water from me. I am making sure NOT to over cool her as I have read that THIS can be just as dangerous
She needs the fever to fight this bug.

for her mouth breathing. I took her into a steam bathroom per the ER vets advice to get her airways to open. My next step will be a breathing treatment, but for now her lungs sound ok. (I checked with my stethascope,
)

Time to go another round in the shower!!
