Even though its a stat, some people I know do not have it off. Some companies have said take your pick, Family Day or Civic Holiday (which is not a stat). People have picked Civic holiday over this new one.

My hubby does have it off though

It is not a Canada-wide holiday. I do know it is a holiday in Ontario but I'd have to look up whether it is a holiday in other provinces.

We have it off as a stat holiday but lost our "floater" as a result.

Yep, I have it off, but I only found that out for sure yesterday! It seems there's a lot of confusion about it, whether you're entitled to it or not. Personally, I would much rather have an extra holiday in the middle of summer (sure most people would).

Here it's called "Louis Riel Day." I'm off that day but only because it's my usual days off. In the healthcare field you don't usually get stat days off unless they fall on your usual days off or if you are in management. Us regular joes have to suck it up and work holidays and weekends.

Zoeysmom - the schools here are closed?

We have it off work, not that I work Mondays anyway but we are opening the animal shelter so I am working there instead

Ahhhh, I did not know that. If I was still working, our holidays were the normal stats plus civic, as well we got a "birthday" holiday... it was in our contract that if we ever got another stat we'd lose the birthday one.

I'm in SW Ont. too, Thames Valley School board and our schools are closed.

The presidents are like family to Americans. We have it off for the presidents.
