Can someone explain to me....

The naming of pedigreed kitties?

I never understood why there are sooooo many names for a kitty.

Example (from Sam's website)

Grafton Sing A Rainbow
Captivating Sweet Escape (aka Fluffy)

why the big long names? Why not just Fluffy?
I've seen some with initials prior to the name, which I am assuming are the initials of the breeder or cattery?

I undestand the the first name is the name of the cattery/breeder. Then a long name (for uniqueness?).

I'll use our Stud Wild Bill as an example.

His Official name in TICA is:

RW SGC Overlandtrl Wild Bill of Calirags

The RW SGC stands for "Regional Winner, Supreme Grand Champion"

Overlandtrl is the cattery he was born into

Wild Bill is his name.

Calirags is my cattery name.

I think we messed up.
We only put Cleopatra on the blue slip when we sent it in a few weeks ago.
We even put that for 2nd choice when we should have put more.
I bet it comes back and says name taken.

Tell her your situation, ask about the name and it's status and give her a couple of other choices. I.E. Wizardgate Cleopatra Egyptian Queen.

That way you may not have to re-do everything. Assuming they haven't kicked it back yet.

Yeah, closed on the weekends.

Do you know if they are closed monday since its a holiday?
I did email the lady but I think calling would be faster.

You want it "unique" to the cattery. Fluffy is too common. You can use that for a "call name" but most just want to make it sound more fancy.

The first part of the name is the cattery it was bred at. The "middle" name is the cat's name, and when you see "of....(name)" - that is the cattery that owns the cat.

For example:

Charlie (name we call him at home) is DotDotDot Charlie Wonka of TC. DotDotDot is the cattery name, Charlie Wonka is Charlie's name and "of TC" is my cattery name (TC).

Jack's name will be Catiators Cpt Jack Sparrow of TC.

My Cornish Rex, Spooky (name we called him) was DNA's Top Secret of TC.

And once they have titles the name has letters at the front, my Farley is
Br. Db. Gr. Ch. Ozspots Lord Arlington

(Bronze Double Grand Champion)

Over here we are limited to 25 letters including spacing, so having a suffix of your own cattery name is not common unless you choose a shorter name for the cat.

Many breeders theme name the litter, other go by alphabetical order so all kittens will have A names etc.

I think you've had it answered but I will explain a little bit about the NZ side.

Here we just have the cattery name 'Grafton' or 'Captivating' and then the name just for fun which can only be used once per prefix. So there's no problem with having a Grafton Sing A Rainbow and a Captivating Sing A Rainbow. Here we aren't allowed to use numbers (such as 6,7) in our names or the names of live people for example I wanted to register a kitten a few years back 'Captivating Tiger Woods' but I had to change it to Tiger Woulds.

We do not have suffixes here in NZ for example 'Grafton Sing A Rainbow of Captivating' - that doesn't happen here

So, most times, the fancy name is just for "papers"? I noticed sometimes kitties are called part of their registered name, but not always.

Like Sam's "Fluffy".

Some people choose to use a call name based on the registered name, others use completely different names.

Grafton Sing A Rainbow, might be called Sing or Rainbow at home.

Mine have different names, no reason - just because
Satin Mousse - Anastasia
Silk Truffle - Demetri
Lord Arlington - Farley

Yeah it just depends on the cat I guess. For example I don't like the name "Rainbow" so much so Sing A Rainbow was just Holly.

And Fluffy had her call name before her registered name.

My cats:

Tickle Me Elmo - Elmo
Flutterby - Flutterby
Kinda Nortie But Nice - Sophie
Sweet Escape - Fluffy
Telling Tales - Tales
Flyme To The Moon - Sonic
Keeping Secrets - Secrets

Just depends on the cat and yeah the registered name is what they're shown as also, it's just to distinguish one cat from another - I guess

Basically, in TICA
cattery name born to, space, cats name , space, cattery name owning cat,
can't be longer than 32 letters including space.

Some catteries don't put thier suffix on as the kittens bred by the parents will be cattery name, cats name

For example: my first two Siberians: this is the most common naming in the US
Sibirskiy Viktorya and Sibirskiy Oleg (I didn't use my suffix you will note but they were still owned by me)
Their kitten (male) I kept: Moonandstarkatz Armand

Also, a kitten is bred by who ever owns the dam at the time of mating.

Then imported cats, from FIFe, the cattery bred by could be the suffix since they don't use suffixes.

For example: ZhenShen (cats name) Sibirskiy Prestige (cattery bred by) *RU (country code)

Gladys (cats name) Silva line (bred by) *RU (country code)

And some naming is done via lineage in Russian breeds or via record keeping if a litter isn't named alphabetically.
Cica F Rajjah Zhandarmovna Black (at her first show this weekend)
Cica (Cattery bred by) F (litter of that parentage) Zhandarm (her father) ovna (means daughter of) Black (named for the lineage cattery in Moscow).

To top it off, catteries registered in FIFE or WCF can be used in naming of TICA or CFA because they aren't duel registered.

For example there is an old Abakan Siberian line which is now a new cattery name in Italy.

So what would someone do if they did not have a cattery?

Say I wanted a show alter and planned on doing a lot of showing but I am not a breeder and never have any intentions of being one. So how would you name a kitten that was born into a cattery but came into a home that was not a cattery?

I am just a pet owner, have no cattery. (Although I am not showing my kits, this is the same type of example.)

My Max was born into Meridian, so when I filled out his TICA paperwork I named him "Meridian Miracle Maxwell."

He had been called Maxwell as a kitten, or Max for short, and I adopted him when he was 8 months old. I added the "Miracle" to his official registered name because it's a miracle that he's still alive (he had a life-threatening incident when he was just 9 weeks old and much too curious and sneaky.)

I consider myself extremely blessed to have him in my life.
