WASHINGTON – Saying, "I made a mistake," Republican Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire abruptly withdrew as commerce secretary nominee on Thursday and drew a testy reaction from the White House, suddenly coping with the third Cabinet withdrawal of Barack Obama's young presidency.

Very interesting, I'm not sure what to make of it.

Doesn't matter who asked whom, IMO. Obama should have people on his administrative team that support his policies. Asking a Republican with a history of strong fiscal conservatism to sign on to his staff when he's pushing through a huge spending bill isn't going to cut it with anyone with a spine. I'm glad Gregg didn't cowtow to the President when it would have meant going against his core values. Good for him! I'm sure Obama would have held that pick in his Cabinet over the GOP's heads as the Congressional Republicans being partisan when he appointed one of their ranks as his Commerce Secretary, even if he had to sell his own soul to accept the appointment.

Not to mention, the biggest power grab ever by the White House by taking the Census away from Commerce.

And people thought President Bush grabbed to much power.

Apparently it was a total difference in values, in particular relation to the stimulus package and the Census.

“However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me. Prior to accepting this post, we had discussed these and other potential differences, but unfortunately we did not adequately focus on these concerns. We are functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy."

Pretty good decision on his part.

Welcome back, Senator Gregg.
