As you may know, Hobbes died today at 2:50 PM. He had congestive heart failure, and we had to have him put to sleep.
Hobbes was an amazing cat. He was a grey British shorthair-type, and very handsome and debonaire. I called him my proper English gentleman. He was so polite! He would wait for permission to jump in my lap. He was never insistent or pushy--just a big marshmallow. He was abandoned by a neighbor years before we moved in. After we moved in, we took him into our home. I still remember the first time we fed him, at his old house. I called him, and he came to me! I sat on the bench, and he wanted me to hold him, which I did. He was such a loving cat. Everyone who met him adored him. He would pin a guest to the chair literally for hours, making them pet him (but they never seemed to mind!). I've never met a more loving, social cat. He adored me, too. He just lived to be loved by me. I'll miss his comforting paws kneading me at just the right comfort level...
The past 3 days were awful for us all. I stayed by his side as much as I could, even though I think he had dementia, and didn't know who I was. He was one tough guy--he held on this long. Late last night, I found him sitting on the shelf, under this desk, where the heater vent is--his favorite spot. I spread out his favorite blanket, and turned up the thermostat for him. I took my sleeping bag, and some blankets, and planned to sleep on the floor next to him, but it really hurt my bad back, and he seemed to be sleeping peacefully, so I went to bed at 3AM. I fully expected him to die in his sleep. When I got up at 6, he had moved into the living room. I decided that it was time to help him the best way I could. I made the vet's appointment. And I'm glad I took a day off from work to spend his last hours with him. It pained me to think of him dying alone while I was at work.
Rest is peace, Hobbs-terrific (his nickname). We love you. I'm so glad you came into our lives, and that we could give you a good home in your last years.
If there is a kitty heaven, you certainly have earned your place there.
