The Right to Die - Page 2

Both me and my mum strongly believe in euthanasia for humans, and she has asked me to help her if necessary at the end - not sure I could, but I do suspect I am the only one she has asked, I doubt either my brother or sister could (sister definitely not, wouldnt like to say about my brother). My granddad died very suddenly 2 years ago when my nan was just starting with dementia, and sadly it hastened it, we are all amazed she is still alive 2 years on, and it would be better for her not to be, she isn't herself anymore, and wants to be with my granddad again, I dont know what is stopping her. She was a nurse for years, and I suspect she wouldnt want to be like this either, so it isn't just people who are in pain who should have the right of euthanasia, things like dementia can be just as debilitating, and people shouldnt have to live like that, as if they have no chance of improvement, and only going to decline, it isn't fair, and I Certainly wouldnt want to live like that.

What I find interesting about this argument is that there can be a fundamental conflict between science and religion, and it is science that keeps people alive longer than what they would naturally be if science didn't intervene. You can argue that God played a hand in creating the medical instruments that can keep people alive. But if those instruments didn't exist, they would not have survived and there wouldn't be a question about pulling life support from a patient.

I believe that prolonging a person's life thru life saving technology is not natural, and in a way, taking away God's choice to take life away when it is their time. Aren't we playing god with our technology?

Interesting observation Amy, and I'm inclined to agree with that; other than to say that there's a "fundamental" conflict between science and religion -- I'd say the conflict arises from mankind's misuse of science to "play" God; mankind's use of science to try to say God is irrelevant. Whereas He created science; science is the study of God's creation. But an interesting viewpoint all the same -- take away the technology and allow life to pass naturally. I'd condition that on the proper use of medical technology to alleviate pain and suffering, of course.

I've always said "just because we can doesn't mean we should."

I saw the TV show that addressed this issue that your were talking about - it does give a person pause to "re-think".

I was grateful for the sensitive way the show addressed this difficult issue because it helped me not to be so "black and white" about the struggles that people are having regarding end of life issues.

Helping with pain is one thing, but doing it with the intention of ending someone's life is something the innocent, unhardened, conscience will have trouble dealing with.

I say euthanasia IS a slippery slope, and if this procedure is condoned, then the abyss is close by.
