Hi im a new cat owner, Actually I own 2 new cats, they are brother and sister that are a year old. When I adopted them, I was able to take the boy home, but not the girl because he was fixed, and she wasn't. When I brought the girl home the next day, the boy started to act funny around her. He began to start biting the back of her neck, and I mean grab on it and not let go. She didn't seem to mind too much, but it would last for 3-5 min at a time, with her finally kicking him off of her. Is this a sibling thing or is this a behavior problem that needs to be worked on. They don't seem aggressive towards each other, its just he does that to her over and over again. Its not like they are strangers to each other, they have been in the same cage together in the shelter, and they are familly.

Robin has the female been spayed? That will help out a lot to get the female spayed. The other behavior is typical male dominance, and the two of them should establish a pecking order in due time. It is just a mild form of aggression, and if you invest in a Feliway Comfort Zone room mister, that will help as well. But if the female has not been spayed, please get her spayed as soon as possible.

You can find the comfort zone mister here:

Yeah they are both fixed now, which was the reason why I didn't take both of them home, I took her home the next day after her surgery. So this is normal, it is just going to take some time for them to get used to each other again?

Hi Shortie,

Welcome to TCS!
I also have 2 cats that are brother and sister. Socks, the male cat sometimes does this to Boo, but it doesn't last for long. This is just normal male aggression, and like Hissy said, its nothing to worry about. I've had Socks and Boo for over a year and Socks still does this once in awhile, but not often.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them and we'll try to answer them the best that we can.

Great that is a relief. My boyfriend got worried and told me that he had to lock Prince in the bathroom because he thought it was something sexual going one, which didn't make any sense because they are both fixed. I figured that it wasn't nothing to worry about since Princess didn't too much mind it.

No it is just cat language.
Brought about by their natural tendencies and not something they can really control. The Comfort Zone will help though a great deal.

"Mounting other cats and grasping their neck is also a dominance display. As long as the two cats don't hurt each other or object, there's nothing to worry about. If it's stressing the target kitty, try painting the back of the cat's neck with bitter apple so the fur tastes bad and the other cat leaves him alone."

Oh and I will move this to behavior for you- that is where it needs to be.
