I only ever use my TV to watch DVDs or listen to music. I didn't apply for a coupon, and don't plan to purchase a converter box.

I feel like they have been talking about this digital transition forever...I'm tired of hearing it!

I have the converters but need to get better antennas because the UHF stations didn't scan.

The van's TV? At least this gives me some more time to enjoy it. ( I have a conversion van with a nice little color TV. I listen to it when I drive.)

This is the dumbest thing I've heard of!

Obama said that the low-income people aren't prepared for it. If they haven't heard about it, they weren't watching TV and don't need it anyway. Just another reason to spend $650 billion in the "stimulus" package.

As far as emergency situations go, there's always radio and they aren't converting to anything new and different. Your old radios will still work just fine. People can still get the information, even if they didn't get the coupons.

Oh for pete's sake. They've only been advertising this on TV for over a year. I agree, if some people don't know about it that means they don't watch TV anyway. And if others know about it but were too lazy to get the converters should be their loss and their stupidity. That would just mean they're going would have to miss Survivor or American Idol for a while.

As Kathleen Madigan (comedienne) points out, this is just like when the U.S. decided to go over to the metric system. The date came, and nothing happened. "Nah, just to difficult," was the verdict.

Ditto and likewise! My guess is that the people that aren't ready are in that condition because they are procrastinating. If they aren't ready now with a few days to go, they won't be ready at the end of the extension either, because they're going to put it off till after the last minute.

You know, when I went to the website to apply for the coupon, one of the questions asked if we currently had cable or satellite. We have a basic package because without it we get 2 very "snowy" channels. I didn't want to admit that we pay for TV because I thought we probably wouldn't get the coupon, but I didn't want to lie either, so I never applied.

Our financial situation has changed for the worse.

I guess I'm one of the people Obama is talking about.

But you didn't apply. The worst they could have said is "no". And if you have basic cable you should be fine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this has to do with people that are still using antenas to get signals through the air.

I don't either. Most of the time I watch DVD's on the computer. I rarely watch TV.

No, I didn't apply. I didn't want to get a "no" because I know I will need the coupon soon. I closed out of it because I was tempted to lie. Like I said, our financial situation has become worse. I can't afford to pay for TV much longer. I'm holding out because I like the food channel so much.

There wouldn't have been a shortage of coupons if people weren't hoarding them either. I know someone who has 6 coupons. He had them sent to several different addresses. It's a guy who can easily afford the boxes at full price.

I really shouldn't have made this about me though. I was just pointing out that IMO, not all people who didn't apply are lazy and stupid. Really I don't get all the anger associated with this. Are you missing out on something substantial because of the delay?

Hon, I wasn't attacking you, and I hope you didn't take it that way. From my understanding though (and again, someone correct me if I'm wrong) if you have basic cable, you should be fine. I hope your financial situation improves soon.

As for the person you know that is hoarding coupons....I wouldn't be surprised if he was planning on selling them on ebay or something. Now, this just screws up his plans doesn't it.

As for being angry, I'm not "angry"...I just think it's stupid to postpone something that has been advertised for over a year. It's a "hurry up...and wait" thing and that just annoys me.

I didn't take it like you were attacking me. Thanks for your well wishes. Yes, you are correct that those with basic cable (or satellite) will be fine.

I wasn't trying to single you out. I just happened to pick you as one of several I wanted to respond to. Someone else said it's the dumbest thing she ever heard of.

SUrely there's not any ulterior motive to this...

This will free up a huge swath of frequencies, which the FCC has auctioned off to other telecommunications firms. One buyer was Verizon, who will use this spectrum for its wireless broadband networks (again, providing Internet for Blackberries and similar devices).

Specifically, they will use this spectrum to launch their fourth-generation wireless broadband network (or “4G” as it’s known, in contrast to the “3G” you hear about with today’s iPhones and Blackberries). So, Verizon’s 4G network awaits the transition to digital TV.

But Sprint and Clearwire, on spectrum they already own, have begun launching their 4G network. That means Sprint is ahead of the competition in wireless Internet. It also means Sprint and Clearwire stand to benefit from Obama’s push to delay the transition to digital TV: The longer broadcasters use analog signals, the longer Verizon has to wait to get the spectrum it needs for its 4G network—which gives Sprint a longer honeymoon as the only network offering 4G speeds.

Isn't it "handy" that the new administrations telecom advisor is a former lobbyist for Clearwire, the very firm that stands to benefit the most from this?
