If you could invent a holiday, what and when would it be? What special traditions would take place on that day?

That's a great one! Or annual spay and neuter your animal day - with low cost services, vax, check ups, etc. So there would be no excuse!!

I would invent 4 extra holidays revolving around the seasons.

First day of spring- holiday- must plant something, be it flowers, tree or
whatever.

First day of summer- holiday- go to the beach, lake or some outdoor fun activity.

First day of Fall- holiday- have family rake the leaves day!

First day of Winter- holiday- Well of course it's just too cold so stay in and have a roaring fire.

Ok, only if you come up here with a shovel and dig through the frozen ground! We usually get our worst snow right before (or sometimes after) the first day of spring. So could I postpone it until the middle of May?

Mine would be the "stay home and snuggle with your animals" day! Preferably on a Monday for a LONG weekend, and it doesn't matter what animal it is. Although, I really don't want to snuggle with a spider or a snake.

We did that last year in our city, I got most of the vets on board and they even offered certificates that could be bought on that day cheaply and used within 30 days. I was really disappointed in the number of people that took advantage of it. $75-100 off a speuter is alot for people not to take advantage of

Did you get a lot of media saturation/coverage? Even then, people don't pay attention to things... and they are lazy.. then they complain that it's too expensive. But hey, offer them a free Grand Slam brekkie at Denny's and they will be lined out the door (true story).

Here in my part of metro Detroit, the county shelter does a monthly low-cost speuter program and they get a pretty good turn out.

Alley Day. Has a nice sound, eh?
Date: September 1.
Traditions: Every body would gather in an alley (or is it ally?).
People that mispell the word would have to go to a shelter.
Once every body has gathered, all of the trash cans would
be turned over and emptied in the alley. The party would begin
by retrieving food from the trash cans and hopefully there might
even be something like Ripple wine.

The whole idea of this holiday is to remind people of what many cats
have to go through to survive when they are left to fend for theirselves.

DH and I already celebrate these days, particularly the spring and summer ones. For spring, we dance under the stars. For summer, we blast out James Taylor's Summer's Here on the stereo. We cringe for fall. For the winter one, we toast the fact that the days are about to get longer again.

I can't think of any new holidays. I believe there is a national spay/neuter day already, but most people aren't aware of it. There are holidays for virtually everything. DH and I pick obscure ones and celebrate in strange ways. One of my favorites is Talk Like a Pirate day.

Lee, I've said it before... you are absolutely brilliant.

It might also make them think twice about assuming that homeless people like it that way.

Do you know the story JT tells on his father about the first of May?
