Well, I heard from our local pound spay/neuter group and they had an opening for tomorrow morning and I took it. I have to have him there at 8 in the morning and pick him up between 5 and 5:30 in the afternoon. It's 50 dollars for the neuter and rabies shots. I've got to trap him this evening and they said nothing to eat or drink after 10pm tonight. I hope he will not hold this against me, but this really is for the best. Otherwise, I'm afraid I will wake up one morning and find him bloodied and close to death. I'm going to put him in a dog carrier and keep it covered in the garage for the night. Any suggestions as to what I can do to make his life a little easier tonight? He is so used to running free, I'm afraid that being in a dog carrier will scare him to death. With no food or water, what can I give him to comfort him? Any suggestions? (I know he is a feral, but he loves to be with me, and I don't want to ruin the trust and love we have developed.

Put something of yours in there - dirty sweatshirt - something that smells like you. That should help somewhat. and cover the dog carrier except for the front so he can see out but it would be cave-like and safe-feeling for him.

I had the same thing happen to me. I trapped two cats on the morning of their neutering and when both were released after some time for the healing process they acted like they hated me. A month later and one is his old self and just as lovable as he was before, but the other still won't let me pet him like he once did. (I guess one forgave me and the other did not)

I am sure like everyone else here will tell you patience is the key. Even if he doesn't appreciate it right away I am sure he will in the long run. People say that you should try and use soothing music, it didn't work for mine but you might want to give it a try. Classical or Violin.
