A friend of mine has two male cats, both fixed. One is a 7 year old DSH tabby who is very laid back. The other is a Maine Coon (mix?) just over a year old, and is a terror. He is an antoginzer extraordinaire to both the other cat and her two dogs (Male and Female chihuahuas). To his credit, he's not vicious in terms of looking to cause injury, he just likes to play. A brat.

So, my question is, if she were looking to get another cat, would a male of female be a better choice? She's worried about territorial issues with a female. I brough a female in with my two boys and there were no such issues. Was I lucky, or is this something to be concerned about? Will the Coonie's alpha-male characteristics likely diminish as he gets older? (They're supposed to be a pretty docile cat, I thought...but at the same time, they can be very possessive of their owner, yes?)

For that matter, do you think a kitten or adult cat would be better?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know that gender would be an issue in the case with boys, I would just try to find a kitten close to the Maine Coon's age that is equally playful so that they can play with and terrorize each other, rather than everyone else
