My male cat's nose always runs. He's a good guy and puts up with it with as much dignity as he can, but he seems unhappy and the mucus is messing up our house. He has a condition where he snores and wheezes, but the worst part is that his nose always runs. We've tried antibiotics and anti-inflamitories, and they generally haven't worked. A few months ago, the vet gave the cat a large dose of penicillin as an anti-inflamitory and it appeared to help for about a day, but I don't think we can keep giving him large doses of this, particularly if the effect wears off very quickly. Have any of you had the same issue with your cat? Has anything else worked?

Have your cat checked for Feline Herpes using the IDEXX Real PCR URD test. Also have your vet do a culture of the mucous to see if there are any secondary bacterial type infections. The vet can also have the lab run a sensitivity test on the culture to find out what medication will best treat any infection, if found. Then, talk to your vet about giving your cat an antihistamine such as Claritin. I give 1/2 of a 10mg tab to my cat once a day and it's helped tremendously with her sneezing.

When you talk to the vet, ask about using Lysine. It is often used with feline herpes. The vet will sell a lysine paste but I use a powdered form that I add to their food.
