My mom had a fasting glucose test and also the one which took the two hours in a doc office.
I can't recall the exam names of the "tests" but for one here number was "6".
And the other it was 117, then she drank the sugar stuff it went up to 143 then back down to 105.

She is in pretty good health and will be 80 in June. She does take meds for osteoporosis and a mild BP condition. Here biggest health concern to me is she doesn't eat alot and needs to put some some weight (I'll give it her some of mine!)

She is looking for a book or info on carbs. I told her she doesn't eat enough carbs or food in general to have her diet be a concern. She and my dad eat a pretty balanced diet.

Any suggestions I can pass along for easy to understand info would be great. They don't have a computer so any websites wouldn't be helpful.

Gail, those numbers are actually pretty good especially the A1C, that "6" is what my dr wants mine to be.....I'd give my eyeteeth for mine to look that good.....but neither do I work at it like I should!

My favorite book, if you are familiar with the "Dummies" books is one thats called "Diabetes for Dummies", it really breaks it down into a lot of small bits of maneagable info, and I learned a lot from it (that says a lot, actually, having lived with a diabetic and done a couple of research papers on diabetes.

From my chef friend who is married to a diabetic:

First, she needs to count carbs... tell her to go get (specifically) this...

http://www.amazon.com/Calorie-King-C...e=UTF8&s=books

it's available at all bookstores, and runs about $8. Make sure she gets the 2007 edition. It's WELL worth it.

Then... these two are TERRIFIC....

http://www.amazon.com/Healthy-Exchan...e=UTF8&s=books

and

http://www.amazon.com/Everyday-Gourm...e=UTF8&s=books

I find them both giving EASY, tasty meals. And easy ways to account for nutrient values/exchanges.

I believe that would be a glucose tolerance test - I thought they lasted longer than 2 hours, though? I guess those with reactive hypoglycemia are SOL on a 2 hour test since symptoms usually occur later...

Though her numbers don't look that bad, the other health problems are worrisome. I know of one person who has dysautonomia caused by blood sugar problems (not diabetes, yet). She also developed stage 3 kidney failure before anyone could figure out what was going on.
I have no books to suggest, but do hope that you help push her to pursue a treatment to fully control this - the BP issue already suggests there is a problem.

Small meals, more of them, low carb - watch the glycemic index. Starchy foods are a problem. More protein. Also, fat helps slow digestion a bit. So maybe adding a little bit more into meals could help.

Thanks for the info-I'll stop in and the local bookstore to see if they have them and scan through them before recommending her to buy them.
When mom and dad come to visit I'm always pushing good healthy foods and snacks as well as when they visit my sister.

These look like GREAT books! I put them on my Amazon.com wishlist.
My husband is diabetic, so I think these will be a wonderful help.
