Beware Blinds

I walked into our kitchen today to find Suzi, our youngest cat, dead.

In the short space of time it took me to drive my son to nursery, she had somehow managed to get irrevocably tangled in the cord from the blinds on the window she has used her whole, short life to get in and out of the house.

After cutting her free and attempting to recusaitate her by compressions and breaths, I took her down to the local vet, still trying to do compressions while I drove. But she was long dead.

Looking back, I knew she was dead the minute I saw her, but denial and hope drove me to try, despite the obvious onset of rigor mortis. Suzi had been the runt of her litter, we had bottle fed her from birth. Now she's gone.

Any other cat owners who let their cats come and go via a blinded window, please learn from our tragedy and cut or otherwise deal with those  cords.

Rest now Suzi. We'll miss you. X

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

I posted that message late last night as a way of dealing with my grief. I spent all night thinking about Suzi, and today isn't shaping up to be any better.

Suzi Wong is survived by her mother, Smidgey Woo and half brother Manny Bianco. Yes, pretty nutty names, I'll admit.

I just hope our experience helps someone to realize the danger before it's too late for their beloved cat.

No not silly names, they're great.

So Sorry for your loss, how horrible that must have been. Mine don't go outside but we do pull the blinds up so they can sit in the window. I am definitely going to fix the pulls now

I am SO sorry for your loss! Toby LOVES to play with the Venetian blind strings, and I worried about that with her too. I will make sure they are now out of her reach.

I am so sorry. I hate reading sad posts like this. It's hard enough to lose them to illness but accidents are so awful. RIP little one.

I am very sorry to hear about your feline friend! I too am a cat lover and through the years have had to have several put to sleep for health reasons. It was like losing a family member. At this time I have a cat that turned 21yrs old in July. He is getting extremely frail and I feel that he will not be with me much longer. It will be the hardest of all! I did want to say however, that when it comes to our animals we love, versus our families and our own health....a clear balance has to be set. I am fairly certain that had you lost your life in a car accident while driving and trying to resuscitate your kitty...your family would have found the equation to not balance out in any way, shape, or form.. in the question of them needing "your life" to be #1 before the life of the family pet. Does this make sense, or am I totally missing something here??? And don't get me wrong about you or me loving our furry little friends who have been such a comfort in our lives and who I myself have definitely grieved over when I lost them....but still there has to be a balance in my minds eye. Sorry for your loss but thank goodness you survived the drive.

oh how horrible, so sorry for your loss, My siamese got tangled in the rope from the dangly things they have on cat towers, i was sitting at the table, turned around and there she was...hanging, it has wrapped around her throat, luckily i was able to untangle her before she was harmed!
