"I don't know why I was turned back," Ayers said in an interview this morning from Chicago. "I got off the plane like everyone else and I was asked to come over to the other side. The border guards reviewed some stuff and said I wasn't going to be allowed into Canada. To me it seems quite bureaucratic and not at all interesting ... If it were me I would have let me in. I couldn't possibly be a threat to Canada."

Must be something in that passport of his. Maybe those visits to his pal Hugo Chavez?

Good for Canada. Maybe they take a dimmer view of his past terrorist activities than this country does. Bravo

Canada will not allow anyone in convicted or indicted for a felony, unless the indictment is ordered removed from all records by a judge. They work from the NCIC computer database, and I'm sure Ayers is still listed as indicted in there. Ayers was definitely indicted, but never tried so he was never acquitted and the charges could, technically, be reinstated.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Well, that's not entirely true.

After Martha Stewart was convicted and served jail time on charges of conspiracy, obstruction of justice and making false statements, and was allowed into Canada, for a pumpkin race across a lake.

Initially she had some trouble getting a permit, so she announced she wouldn't be able to attend.

However, the Canadian Immigration Minister at that time intervened and issued her a "temporary residency permit" which allowed her to cross over into Canada.

I guess it all depends on the crime and "fame" of the person involved. Her crimes were relatively harmless compared to the crimes of setting off bombs.
