Sugar is pregnant, bad mommy

I guess I'm a bad kitty mommy, our little Sugar is pregnant. She's due the first week of February. We had an appointment to get our big boy Sam neutered in November and my transmission DIED. So we had to postpone his appoinment and Sugar came into season before Sam made it to his appointment. I don't really have a question except when would it be good to switch Sugar to kitten food? We have her on really good/high quailty food made by Blue Buffalo and will use thier kitten food when it's time, I just need to know when it will be best to start switching her over, we have already been giving her a little extra of her regular food and she eats it all.

She's pretty cute right now, she's so round that the hair on her sides is starting to stick straight out instead of lay flat.

I usually started the kitten food for mom about 2 weeks before she was due. Just start mixing it in the food now and by the time she delivers, she should be on all kitten food till they are weaned. Also right after deliver, then free feed her.

cool, that's exactly what I had planned to do, so at least I'm right on track.

Poor baby is looking so uncomfortable now, I remember my last weeks of pregnancy, I can feel for her. She walks a little slower and doesn't play with the others as much and sleeps a lot. I got out my stethoscope the other day and listened to the kittens, I only heard one before Sugar started purring, but it's heart was strong and fast like it's supposed to be.

One tip - when you fix up her kitten box, get 2 pillowcases ready. One has newspaper inside - this is to put in the box when delivering so the blood/fluids can be absorbed.

Fix another with a soft towel/blanket for after all kittens are born for mom and the babies to lay on. The pillowcase will prevent the tiny claws from getting caught in the towel or rug.

I always have the vet's number handy with 7 fur friends you never know, so far everyone is healthy, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Didn't realize she was longhair - she's really pretty

But can I suggest you get someone to help you trim some of the belly fur down shorter to make it easier to nurse the kittens?

The daddy is Sam, his picture is up on the calendar contest page, it was on page 16 last night.


His coloring is cream with a silvery tiger stripe over shadowing it, very pretty.
