Is anyone else tired of hearing about Obama and the Inauguration?

You know, he's just another president. I don't think I've ever seen this much hype over an Inauguration before and I've been voting since 1987. I know it's an "historic" inauguration and all but come on. It's almost like the Beatles frenzy back in the 60's.

Of course, it doesn't help that the major networks and news we watch are from DC and Baltimore so every other story is about how the inauguration is affecting those areas. Since all the hotels are booked, people are now renting out lots in their yard so people can put up tents! Yeah, I'm going to pay $50.00 to sleep in a 6X6 tent in 20 degrees weather. But, you can bet people are going to do that.

I have people calling everyday at work trying to get a financial hardship withdrawal from their retirement account because they just HAVE to go to the inauguration. AND, they say Obama says they don't have to pay an early withdrawal penalty on that. Funny thing is, I have people living in DC trying to get money to get OUT of DC for that week. You couldn't pay me enough to go to DC this weekend.

And, they whole commerative coin thing....can he at least be sworn in and DO something before he is immortalized in gold, bronze, whatever??

I didn't vote for Obama, but I wish him the best of luck and hope he does a good job. But, it just seems like the majority of this country has turned into screaming little tini-boppers over him.

It's a love-fest for sure. Commemorative plates are out there too, and I posted a link in the "pecs" thread where Topps is now issuing a trading card set.

I forget who called politics "Hollywood for the uglier people" but it sounds about right.

Yeah, I just saw your post about the trading cards. Do they come with bubble gum??

I heard on the news that its costing 95 million dollars! What a waste of money. Think what good could be done for the USA people with that much money.
Nope. If I didn't have a huge case coming up at work, I'd be sleeping on the floor of my sister's apartment along with a dozen other people from all over the country who are crashing with her for the event. I am jealous - she works for a congressman and has a ticket to the actual event.

Actually over $150 million....

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...uguration-cost

Carole Florman, spokeswoman for the joint congressional committee on inaugural ceremonies, told the New York Daily News, which estimated the cost at $160m: "We're always very budget conscious. But we're sending a message to the entire world about our peaceful transition of power, and you don't want it to look like a schlock affair. It needs to be appropriate to the magnitude of events that it is."

Florman deals specifically with the inauguration ceremony at the Congress, which is relatively modest. The surge in spending is partly because of the Obama's decision to open the entire Mall to the public.

The federal government has budgeted $49m for the inauguration. But this does not take account of other demands, such as from Virginia and Maryland, the states surrounding the capital, that have also asked for emergency funding.

THis is what REALLY should make us sick.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/relea...0090113-9.html

The President today declared an emergency exists in the District of Columbia and ordered Federal aid to supplement the District's response efforts in support of the 56th Presidential Inauguration.

The folks affected by Katrina should be THRILLED to see that FEMA is stepping right up to the plate to support the inauguration effort.

While I am really sick of hearing about it myself, there really is a lot made of it whenever we have a new president. Many that were disgusted by Bill Clinton and his mistakes were just as thrilled when Bush was first elected into office. His first inauguration was heralded with coins, nuts and plenty of other things. These days everything is commemorated by slapping a picture on just about any item you can think of. There must be Barack Obama toilet paper out there somewhere.

And I thought Charmin was expensive!

Maybe just thinking of him at the time will do for now.

Have you seen the security measures they're putting in place for the event? It won't be a Nation's Capitol that day, it's going to be "Fort Washington".

They're shutting down all bridges from Virginia to DC and 2 major interstates into DC for the entire day. That is fine of government workers that have the day off, but what about the worker that has to commute to the local DC IHOP to pay her bills? Also, I heard on the news the mall and the vicinity is basically shutting down so businesses that could have made a killing selling coffee to cold spectators aren't going to do any business because they can't get there. It's ridiculous.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/...tion.security/

I know any inaugruation is a big deal, especially when presidential control changes parties, but I just don't understand the frenzy here.
I know alot of people don't understand the frenzy or the magnitude of this inauguration but for many people it is a HUGE deal. Give them a little respect. And if you are not in DC and are not going to the event don't worry about the traffic and the security it won't affect you. This no different than any other news story that is shown until people will not watch it anymore. It is not 100% the "elite media" fault. Until the paying public does not buy or watch it will go on. It will be over soon just have some patience.

I could say I am tired of all the road closing and security. This happens every four years with comforting regularity. This year it started a little earlier. I could see the Hay Adams from my workplace and the roads closed around it while Obama was staying there. I work in DC and constantly have these security situations. It is not a big deal. I briefly considered going to the welcoming ceremony. I figured I would park at my building and walk to the mall. I grew up with Bruce Springsteen and John Mellancamp and I love John Legend. But I just don't think I have that much energy or desire to fight the crowds or the cold.

So don't worry everyone only five more days.

Oh, please, he is just another president, only this time we get one that is a first term Senator/Community Organizer that is half black, half white. Whooppee It is not that big of a deal and I know that if McCain would have been elected he would never have wasted all that money on all the hoop-la.

LOL, I actually was waiting for your imput because I know you work in DC. I guess road closings are pretty common to you guys because I know everytime we try to get into DC we have a very simple and concise map from mapquest, but it never fails that a road is closed and we get the grand tour! (oh honey, look...there's the Washington Monument....again...). It probably is easier for you because you know the back ways to get places.

I try not to drive in DC. Sometimes it is unavoidable and I shudder. Most people that I know that work here will not be coming down here on Tuesday to work or otherwise. Personally I will be glad when Wednesday is here. There was going to be difficulties no matter what. More so this year by the sheer number of events. But there are alot of people who for whatever reason want to be here on Tuesday. Whether they lived through Jim Crow laws, or a young persons first involvement with a candidate or they just want to see a historic event, and the first black president is a historic event, they will do whatever to get here. I say let them have this moment. They will not get it again. Four years in the white house will change many perspectives of this administration, maybe for good, maybe not. But, for this gleaming moment, for many people, it is an event not to be missed, a hope of better days. Let it shine on them.

Me, I have a job interview that day so maybe the day won't be all that bad for me either.

Nice carbon footprint there, new administration.

http://thechillingeffect.org/wp-cont...bonBigfoot.pdf

Celebrities, politicians, and bigwigs using 600 private jets will produce 25,320,000 POUNDS of CO2.

Personal vehicles could account for 262,483,200 POUNDS of CO2
In the parade, horses alone will produce more than 400 POUNDS of CO2
The total carbon footprint for the Inauguration will likely exceed 575 million POUNDS of CO2.

It would take the average U.S. household 57,598 years to produce a carbon footprint equal to that of the new president’s housewarming party

Good thing they're gonna work hard on preventing climate change.

I like this part

In the parade, horses alone will produce more than 400 POUNDS of CO2

And two of those horses are going to be from our Toronto Police Department so we're adding to your woes.

I don't get all that. Why do we need horses from Toronto in the inauguration?

I'll have to find the link, but I read where there's a large number of police officers from other states including CA being used, at the expense of the states. But probably being reimbursed at some point by the Federal budget. Good luck with that, since I seem to remember that there's a load of debt still owed to Denver for their convention assistance.

Yup, it's events like this that bring out all the hustlers, hucksters & scammers from out of the woodwork. They'll do ANYTHING to make a buck. 'Typical' behavior from them and so, not surprising to me.

By the by, that toilet paper is 'custom' made. You can get them to print anyone's picture on the roll. Pretty cute idea, tho. It could have quite a market in the 'got dumped by someone' crowd, no?

Good neighborly relations. We like Canada, remember. They are coming with a contingent of Michigan mounted police. Are they the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the ones with the red jackets? Now those are some styling mounties.

Just because we (insert Canada here) want to be a part of this truly historic, monumental, fabulous extravaganza! Who needs any other reason!

Truly, it does not and will not bother me because I can go from Live TV to My Recordings faster 'n you can say barfo'rama.

Hey! I like horses. I don't care where they came/come from. Budwiser was sold to Belgium. Horses are still beautiful.

I don't believe so. My understanding is that they are City of Toronto police officers. The news item that I heard in on focused more on the horses since one of the horses is named after Ed Mirvish (Honest Ed) who did many great things for the City of Toronto.

Hopefully Canada is footing their own bill for it. Somehow I doubt it.
Haven't we, as taxpayers, footed the bill for enough garbage lately? Bailouts, excuse me, I meant to say handouts for industries for their own faulty business practices, Congress robbing the American people of more money by not declining a raise they have done nothing to deserve (much less earn), and now another pricey inauguration ceremony. This rant really has nothing to do with Obama but given the current economic climate in this country, wouldn't a quiet, dignified swearing in without all of the hoopla and cost be more appropriate? I've never been a fan of grand inauguration cermonies no matter who is being sworn into office.
