Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and I have a concern. We adopted our cat Gigi about a yr ago and the first week or two noticed he trembles when he sleeps. We thought it was normal because he is in a new environment and needs time to adjust and feel comfortable. It did go away but comes back from time to time. The trembling is not persistent and only happens once in a blue moon. It happens when he is sleeping. Some might say that he is just dreaming, but it's as if he is cold. Being that he's a long haired cat, I think it's impossible for him to feel cold. Noticed it again today and woke him up, the trembling continued until he got up and stretched. Also, yesterday and today noticed vomit and it was his dry food (whole) as if he didn't chew it at all. Otherwise he is a healthy and a very outgoing cat. Anyone with any answers about this peculiar behavior?

Thank You.

Hi and welcome, ive only been a member for a few days myself. My two do this now and again. Firstly they are not dreaming, it is like us, when we enter a deep sleep, REM. Sometime mine look and sound like they are catching a mouse an sometimes eating it! Or they will suddenly jump so big they wake up! I always thought they were dreaming until i read about it but they're not, although i still like to think they are! if your really worried ask your vet. Hope this helps. Welcome again from Caitsith,Tabitha and Daisy.

Hi and welcome! Cindy does that shivvering from time to time. She used to do it a lot when we first got her from the shelter, but it mostly went away over time (we've had her for 3 years). she still does do it every once in a blue moon though. Usually if I pet her gently and talk to her, tell her she's safe and everything is okay, stuff like that, she stops. I don't know why she did/does it. I did ask the vet, and she didn't know either, but since Cindy is healthy, I don't worry about it.

You could ask your vet about it, particularly if you see other symptoms.

But it could also just be normal REM sleep activity, which can manifest itself in different ways depending on the cat (and the dream, maybe). My cat sometimes twitches as though he's running, and at other times he licks or chews like he's eating.

My orange tabby boy will suckle, whimper, whine, move his feet and twitch his whiskers while sleeping.
