My 3-year-old male cat is definitely one to act out on occasion, but lately he has been behaving like a possessed banshee. Almost every morning I wake to find the toilet paper has been bitten and clawed halfway through the entire roll and the bathroom looks like it's been covered in confetti. I clean it up and the place is like that again when I get home from work.

This has been going on for about a month now, and I can't think of anything that would've changed or be a cause of stress for him. Then last night I came home and he smelled horrible...I'm not sure if he had sprayed or if it was anal sac issues as others have mentioned, but he smelled BAD.

Is there any physiological change that male cats go through around 3 years of age that could be causing him to act out and emit disgustingly funky smells? I can keep the bathroom door shut for now, but I would love to find out that this is a phase of some sort.

Anybody experience anything similar? THANKS!

Hello and welcome.

Is he neutered? and Has he been evaluated by the vet?

The vet would be the qualified person to see if there was a problem with anal sacs or other health issues.

From what I have learned, behavior is sometimes linked to health, sometimes stress or change, maybe some other cat outside at night, etc.

Sorry, the vet is all that I can contribute. I hope things get better.

I second going to the vet. If it is anal glands... You don't want to be the one to express them!!

Cats often "act out" to let us know when they are not feeling well.

Thanks for the replies!

Yep, you're both probably right. He is neutered, but in the past he has had a ruptured anal gland that required vet treatment and he may be having problems again.

Boy was that fun...cat with a satellite dish and rubber glove butt ointment treatment twice a day!
Can't wait to get back on that routine.
