Churches all over the region signing on with Obama

It sounds like their pulling out all the stops

For the people involved, many of whom are mainline Protestants, the events are unprecedented; religion historians and local faith leaders say they can't remember anything similar for a presidential inauguration. Plans sound more like those for a mission trip than a political swearing-in.

The number of churches showing support for Obama is actually not very surprising. In reality, it was only a small smattering of "good ole' boy" churches that actively spoke up in campaign fashion against him.

What does seem surprising to me is the amount of activities some of them seem to be putting into the inauguration. It's almost like their making a party of it

The Obama's are putting a lot of support behind service movements. I'm on the campaign e-mail distribution and got this link from them this morning for a "call to service". It's actually very worth looking into. There were also animal shelters requesting volunteer help.

When I looked up events in my local area, there are a lot of activities that are sponsored by faith based groups. So perhaps they are seeing the Obama's trying to support them in pragmatic ways, by advertising the work they are trying to do.

There will be a lot of parties on election day.

A similiar program was actually started by Reagan called "Take Pride in America." Events have been going on the weekend before MLK holiday for years now, just for this program.

Nice that they removed the "Pot Smokers Unite" event, I wasn't sure legalizing marijuana was a service movement. The free 90 minute massage in Phoenix sounds intriguing though. http://www.usaservice.org/page/event...anuary19/4jgyq

Did a little more research on this, a bill was actually passed in 1994 to recognize the MLK holiday as a national day of service. So this isn't some new idea, it's been going on for over a decade.

And this is the first I've heard of it, and I suspect the first that a lot of people heard of it, which means that the Obama's advertisement for that day is working.
