Diesel just came home from the vet yesterday after four days of antibiotics, Epogen, another pill (some bacteria capsule) and tests, where we confirmed he has CRF. I'm supposed to give him his first sub-q treatment tonight, and he's hiding under the bed.

He's alternating between being halfway-normal (meowing at my feet for food, but not tripping me, that sort of thing) and being Somewhere Else mentally. He wasn't really reactive when I strolled by to his cozy spot and cuddled him for a second - He just kind of sat there. Not too typical.

He's under the bed now, just sitting there. Not looking at me when I call, but avoiding the flashlight beam. I know cats often hide when its their time. What does this mean? If it is his time, then so be it - I'll be happy he's not hurting. If it's not, I'll be happy for me, 'cause I'll get more Dieselhugs.

I'm really scared, though.

I am not sure what all he was on the antibiotics for, or what type. Some are very bad for the kidneys.

Please give Diesel his fluids, they will help him flush the toxins from his system and will help make him feel better. That is if it is the CRF that is making he feel punky.

I have to give 100 ml every day to my Zoe who is estimated to have less that 5 % of kidney function left. She was acting like Diesel when she was first diagnosed last April.

She now runs and plays. No one would know she is a CRF kitty. Please also read the CRF sticky thread at the top of this forums main page. It is the CRF thread. It is long but full of SO much valuable information.

If the vet didn't instruct you to warm the fluids in a sink full of water please do so. There was a recent thread about this search Sub-Q fluids and it should come up.

that you have lots more Diesel hugs in the future.

I will keep you and your sweet Diesel in my prayers.

I'm assuming the weakness is caused by anemia? The Epogen should get that fixed up in about a week. My parent's cat, Samson, had a critical hemoglobin of 3.2 (nearly incompatible with life.) Epogen shots 3x a week, for 3 weeks, jumpstarted his red blood cell production. Once his hemoglobin returned to normal, he only needed 1 shot a week. We kept him going for 11 months after his initial critical crash.

Hiding under the bed might just be that he doesn't feel well. I think between the Sub-Q's and the Epogen, he will begin to feel better pretty quickly.

Good luck!

Thanks for your support, guys.. I plan on giving him a little more time to see if he comes out on his own before I start moving mattresses for sub-Q time.

My boyfriend reminded me that when Diesel and I moved back to my parents' house after about a year of him living with me, he spent his first couple of weeks hiding under the bed.

This is an encouraging sign, not a sign of doom! He's up to his old Dieseytricks. I've read a lot of everyone's anecdotes in the Sticky, and while I know we don't have forever, we probably have tomorrow.
