My vet gave me Terramycin to use on Angel for his puffy red eye. He said it was herpes. His infection cleared up pretty fast. It has been one week now of using Terramycin and his eye is back to normal. The vet told me to use the ointment for 2 weeks. Is it okay to only use is for 1 week? His eye wasn't really bad to begin with and it is back to normal now. TIA.

I would use it for 2 weeks.
I have a cat with herpes and as soon as I stop her meds her eyes get bad again.
I just started using Lysine.
Once a cat has herpes they will have it on and off for life.
It will not be active all the time.

Definately follow your vets instructions

I am not familiar with the med at all but the situation just reminds me of antibiotics....too many people stop using them once the pet or human feels better, meanwhile they still have the infection but its not showing visibally.

If possible, apply for the two weeks as the vet suggested to make sure the eyes are completely cleared up and cured. Sometimes terramycin clears the eye right up in a few days, but a few more days of treatment will never do any harm and will help ensure they eye is back to normal.

yeah Terramycin sounds to my like a brand name for an antibiotic. Similar to Erethromyacin however that's spelled. I have to take that because I'm allergic to penicillin.

I'll bet he is prescribing this just as a preventative against secondary infection while the virus runs its course, which can last from 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the immunity of the cat. If there was only an actual infection of the eyes, 2 weeks sounds a bit much. But my cats didn't mind Terramycin. I think the carrier oinment actually soothes the eyes a bit when they are dry or itchy.

Always listen to the vet but if you think it's completely healed I would give the vet a call and ask about it. He may explain to you why you should keep doing the treatment. It is an antibiotic so if you stop too early the infection could come back way worst. I don't know a lot about FIV but typically it only takes about 4 days for Terramycin to heal the eye. But the FIV may be the reason he's advised you to use it so long.
