I've got an electronic thermometer that I don't use. it does it's 'thing' in 4 seconds.

Is that something I could shift over to the kitties and take wilbur's temp?

Of course after stuffing it up his butt I don't intend on using it again in my mouth

I use a home digital thermometer on my cat, as recommended and shown by my vet. Mine only takes 2 seconds. As long as you have sterile probe covers so you dont introduce bacteria into the anus, this should work.
The ones for babies (put in ear) also work well, but is a little more difficult to use IMO.

I use the kind of thermometer that youre talking about. I dont have covers for it, I wipe it down with rubbing alcohol before and after I use it, put some vaseline on the end, and all is well.
