I recently joined the site, it looks like a good spot to discuss questions and compare experiences.
I have worked for the same company in both engineering and health/safety/enviromental work for over 30 years. In the past 25 years, my wife and I have had five cats, we lost two of them in 2005.
We currently have three cats, all indoor cats, in order of adoption;
Taz, 10 years old; A neutered ginger tabby tom.
He showed up in the bush across the road from us one morning at about 12 weeks old. He took to me right away but previously had a rough few days, he had a mangled tail and leasions in his mouth.
We took him to our vet who shot him full of atibiotics and amputated quite a bit of the tail. His recovery was swift though. Hyper activity gave him the name.
He is a 19 pound adult, big, not really overweight. He has ear tufts and was left with a tail similar to a lynx.
He is a "gentle giant" that is very friendly.
Morgan (Morgan Taylor Cat) 9 years old, black and white DSH female
Someone threw her from a car at about 6 weeks of age.
She is about 10 pounds and our most graceful and active cat. She is affectionate and playful but a bit "flighty", not really a lap cat.
She is in good physical shape, quite trim in spite of constant begging for treats food, she would be good in one of those TV commercials.
Kasey our most recent cat, brought home in May 2008, she is an 8 to 10 year old torti that I rescued from one of our company's sites.
She was brought there when she was a kitten for rodent control, they had her spayed and she had her shots. I go to the site occassionally as part of my job and the cat has known me for all these years.
As time went on, enevitable changes went on and she did not receive the best of care and in some cases I heard she was kicked around etc. Through all this, she retained a nice nature with people and craved attention. (Later examination showed an old injury to her left rear leg and the tips of the upper canines were broken off.) She was losing patches of fur and looked to be in bad shape.
Last April, I was on site for a few days and had seen enough, I came home and we talked about it and on the next run up there, I brought a cat carrier and took her home.
We did all the vet stuff and the recommended slow introduction from separate rooms etc. She did very well on good quality food and is in very good shape, now and all the fur with full torti colours grew back quite thickly. She has basically "imprinted" on me and has retained her friendly nature with people. She has adapted well to being a house cat and seems happy she doesn't "do" winter anymore.
