By the way, Socks the cat, the Clinton's White House cat, is rumored to be in failing health due to cancer. He is also about 18 years old.

Play happily over the bridge, India.

DH and I were talking about this last night ... litter boxes in the White House? I mean, I suppose they have to have them, right? Just in their living quarters, I suppose.

Wonder who got to clean the box?

I know, I think too much.

Litter boxes in the White House seem pretty tame when you take a look at all the birds, reptiles, rodents, etc. that have lived there: Presidents' Pets

Calvin and Grace Coolidge literally had a zoo at the White House. Most famous and beloved was the white collie, purchased from Thomas and Olive Shover who owned "Shomont White Collies". They also entertained and cared for: Peter Pan, a Terrier, Paul Pry, an Airedale, that was originally named Laddie Buck. and Rob Roy, a white Collie, originally named Oshkosh. Also popular was Calamity Jane, a Shetland Sheepdog. Tiny Tim, a Chow, Blackberry, also a Chow, and Ruby Rough, a brown Collie. They also had Boston Beans, a bulldog, King Kole, a police dog, Bessie, a yellow collie, Palo Alto, a bird dog, and Nip and Tuck, canaries. Snowflake, was also a white canary and Old Bill was a thrush. Enoch, was a goose and they had a Mockingbird belonging to Mrs. Grace Coolidge. Finally there was Tiger, an alley cat, Blacky, another cat and Rebecca and Horace, raccoons. We must not forget Ebenezer, the donkey and Smokey, a bobcat. Given to them by dignitaries from other countries there was also: lion cubs, wallaby,a pigmy hippo, and a bear
Teddy Roosevelt had quite a menagerie, too.

There was at least one President whose kids rode their pony in the house.

Which, of course, is nothing compared to the stories of fox hunts, horses, dogs, and all, in the original Louvre palace halls.

Play happily over RB, India
I know that Abraham Lincoln was esp. fond of cats & there is a story of his 2 boys interrupting a cabinet meeting to announce that Mr. Lincoln's cat had had her babies (in the basement). CatFancy had a recent article about Presidential kitties & Theodore Roosevelt once led the dinner procession AROUND their cat who was snoozing in the middle of the room

RIP India....

The Bush family has other cats as well. The rest of them are clawed and they couldn't bring them to the white house....they stayed with the first President Bush until the ranch in Crawford was finished. They now live there. I really don't like the man, but ya gotta love that he's a cat lover!
