Help! My cat constantly knocks over our drinking glasses and now has started spilling her water bowl all over. As soon as she sees us getting a drink in the kitchen she follows us around waiting for an oppourtunity to knock our glass over.
She only does it with water, not soda or juices.
This behavior has been going on for about 3 months and she started with her water bowl 1 month ago.
She is 1.5 years old.
I have switched water bowls and tried serving her cold water. I give her fresh water daily.
I don't know what else to do.

One of mine did that also, so until he got over it, I used covered cups and changed his bowl to a heavy ceramic bowl that I filled up and it was to heavy for him to bother with. I'm sure you will be getting some other suggestions. Good luck.

I remember reading some where that some cats can't perceive water very clearly like we can. Caspian some times dips his paw in the water bowl before he has a drink and this is probably the reason why perhaps it is some thing similiar with your cat. Perhaps by putting the water in a different bowl, such a metalic bowl or a ceramic might give a reflection for him to see. Some cats like to drink at a height and by putting the water bowl on a flat surface (a table chest of drawers) may stop it being spilt. Another answer though it's the most expensive answer is to get a water fountain. Thats some thing I keep meaning to get. They put their paw and water comes out how cool! And also it keeps the water nice and cool I think. Some thing my mother used to do was leave the tap in the bathroom dripping ever so slightly and her cat used to love to drink that way! Hope that helps! Caspian some times charges into his bowl knocking it over and don't I know how annoying it is to be mopping it up and replacing it!

Oh and anoher little tiplet!! Instead of putting water out why not try ice cubes (witch will end up as water) but they are nice and cold and some cats like to lick at them (though I havn't tried this one either)!!

I did the same thing when my OTB Bogart used to do that. The final straw was when he tipped over a glass of water on my head at 2AM. I switched to covered glasses the next day.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It is comforting to hear at least 1 cat 'got over it'. I will definitely look into the automatic water bowls.
Thanks!

Buried under the cat
I use heavy ceramic and fountains for that reason... Not the cat...

The dog likes to carry her dishes around and spills everywhere.

I have to add that my dearly departed Wayne loved to simply put his big paw into a glass and just pull it over...just for the heck of it. Then he'd walk away. We just learned to keep a keen eye on our drinks.....resorting to holding them by our legs...he's the only cat who ever did that. He didn't care what was in the glass....

My older cat, Phoebe, likes to knock around the water bowl too. It sometimes tipped over, but not too often. I think it is so she can judge how deep the water is. I switched to a ceramic pasta dish....with 3 cats it is just the right size if two want to drink at once. Since it is wide and low, Phoebe can still move it, but it doesn't tip anymore...it will slosh over the side..but that's all. I bought it at Wal-mart for about $3.

Hiding from my SS!
I have two who (combined) do this.

Spooky likes to knock glasses over. My solution was to buy everything in resealable bottles, and wash and reuse those, mainly for water. I bought a few of these cups (http://www.laprimashops.com/Zak-Chil..._p_20-849.html) which are designed for kids that resist spilling when knocked over, though they arenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t spill-proof and they will still leak some if you leave them toppled, its only a few drops vs. the whole glass.

Mulder likes to play and splash all the water out of his water bowl and when possible turn it over. I got them a water bottle and am working on training them to drink from that so I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t have to leave a water bowl out for them to spill. I have them going to the bottle about ½ of the time. Not sure if that is a viable answer for you. I posted about it here (http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=183270).

I have noticed Spooky has really cut back on knocking over drinks since heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s figured out they donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t spill when he does, and Mulder has been splashing the bowl less often (though not stopped completely) since I started the water bottle training.

I wish you the best of luck with your kitty!

We only drink out of plastic cups now because my little Luella Jo has knocked over and broken nearly every water glass we own. She loves to do it in the middle of the night too. I have no idea why. It's not just water glasses. It's also candles (unlit), keys, which she'll bat under things where we can't find them - pretty much anything on a counter ends up on the floor. She also loves to chew on headphone wires. But she's so sweet and wonderful otherwise, I just have to forgive her!
