a little amusing tale for you...

a close friend and neighbour of mine has 3 cats, and i had mentioned a long while ago about buying a cat (i do have one now) but he passed on his advice on getting a cat

"if you want a cat, dont buy one, just put some food down for them by your back door, and you'll soon have one!"

and sure enough thats true, he has one cat which a friend bought him a while back, (so thats 1xcat)

then another cat started hanging about by his door everyday, so he started putting food down for it as it looked hungry, then it started coming in the back door, which is never shut anyway (so now thats 2xcats)

finally another big feral tomcat started hanging around, and he had this huge horrid wound across the back of his neck, which looked very nasty, so he started putting food down for him until he managed to catch him and get him to the vets for "repair" the vest said it didnt look good, but my friend and another neighbour chipped together to help the big feral tom out. a week later he was out the vets with some serious stitches and my mate took him in till he got better, but he never left! (3xcats)

and now the big feral tomcat is the biggest fuss-cat ever! he follows my mate everywhere round the house and garden, and always has to be on his lap.

the politics going on between the 3 cats is very amusing to watch, they really do have thier own lives going on you know! lol

So they dont have problems with each others? Not even with that big tom? (ex-tom now I presume?).

A comment. It is of course great to adopt homeless cats, if you do want to have cat/cats.
But this method here is a little dangerous: he may get in neighbours homecats.
Giving food to wrong cat do creates quite some homeless...

So. Do give food to the hungry, especielly if you are planning to adopt it. But be sure it IS a homeless / astray. It shouldnt be a already owned cat with a waiting home!

There's no place like home
When I lived on my farm and "put food down by the back door", I was feeding 26 cats at one time (all born feral). 11 of them are still alive and living with me. 3xcats quickly grows if you aren't careful!

by ex-tom i assume you mean in regards to him being "doctored" in which case you are right he has been done now.
neither i now my friend would adopt a cat that had a home already dont worry, but there do seem to be allot of homeless ones near us. i have just got back from his place up the road from me and as i left i saw one hanging about by his door. another tom, and another black and white one, he is really big, with one ear that has rips in it, but he seems friendly enough and the other cats at his take no notice of him so i dont think it will be long before he has 4!
my friends door,as i mentioned is always open, to both humans and cats, so people and cats come and go as they please, so any cats which do make it into his "family" will already know eachother well anyway, if you see what i mean?
