My almost 4 month old Siamese kitten loves to sit on our forced hot-air heating vents and I am wondering if this is safe for her? She now will run to the register when she hears the heat kick on! It's not *that* cold in here.

We also have baseboard hot water heat in our sunroom and have found her sleeping wedged between the loveseat and wall on top of the heater.

we've provided her with a nest-bed that came home from the breeder with her but she has wanted nothing to do with it. She much prefers a warm body or the vent for her napping

thanks

It is ok for her to sit on the heating vents.
My cats have always done that.
They can not anymore because they are on teh celing in our house.
Be careful of the water heater though.
My cats are not allowed near it.

No it won't hurt. But it reminds me of a funny story.

A breeder had floor vents in the room where her studs were kept (loose). She had tried to breed a few males to her females and nothing was ever produced. She was telling another breeder about it and they asked if the males sat on the heating vents when they were on.....yes..........and the breeder started laughing.

The males were "cooking" their sperm and were sterile. So the breeder had to build a little seat over the vent to prevent the males from sitting on them directly....and she got kittens with the next breedings!

thats a hilarious story!

my Harley has taken to laying on the heat vents--he's almost 2 but I still worry about him lying on them. He apparently thinks its too cold in here....

One of my cats has never figured out the steam pipe in the bathroom. After I brought him home and let him have a few days to himself in a separate room from the other cats, I let him out to explore. It was winter and cold. The bathroom steam pipe hissed and my cat arched his back and hissed back at it. It was so cute. To this day, he hasn't quite figured out what "that thing" is and yet he loves to lie in front of the bedroom radiator.

thanks for the replies, I was just nervous about her "cooking" her little kitty insides. That' a funny story about the studs! Kind of like humans where they say that men who wear boxer have a higher sperm count..

and mews2much--she's not on the hot water heater--just the base board heat register. It's fairly narrow, so the love seat keeps her from falling off when she is sleeping. It does get a bit a hotter than the hot-air registers, so to be on the safe side, I've moved the love seat out a little, so she can still walk along it, but can't sit down now.

Thanks!

Sounds safe to me. BTW, I don't know if it's true, but my understanding is that Siamese only have one layer of fur as opposed to the 2 of other cats, that have an undercoat and outercoat of fur. I know Mika loves to lay on the TV satellite box because it's lovely and warm and Bijou sleeps under the covers with only his head out on the pillow beside me.

My one cat, Pickles, LOVES to lay where it is warm - he even lays on the top of my computer monitor because of the warmth - although at times i think he lays there just to annoy me... he lays so his tail hangs down across the screen and when i tell him "move your tail i cant see" he swings it back and forth. He is a character!
My other cat, Mosey, is just the opposite he wants to lay where it is cool all the time, i always find him in the spare bathroom sink.

Cats are Great !!!

I have gas radiant heating in my floors, and Lucy and Moose have staked out all the "hot spots"; Rocky's favorite place is right next to one of the baseboard registers. Moose also sleeps under the covers right next to me. It's very sweet.

My gray and white kitth Nala, used tom sit near the heating vents under our sink. Big girl. I was thinking of using it for a Molyneaux add, because we have wood floors. I used to lay by the heat myself. Especially when I was 6, and I used to get done watching Magical Doremi on Saturdays. my brother even caught onto this, as one day after basketball practice he cae down, and laid by the heat. of course hewe both couldn't get all the heat, older brother, you do the math, but it was fun :). Kitty would get up afterwards, and there was nothing wrong with her. She was fine. It's safe if it's the vent. I'd be a little more careful with a higher temperature, or if it's full blown, Hot, and it could be cooking something, but, other than that, it's fine. alright then, i ate KFC buffalo sauce with a sandwich last night, and drank lots of apple juice, and i have to go too the bathroom. bye.
