I brought home a 6 week old kitty today and have a question about using the litter box. I put the litter box in the corner of the dining room and he has had no problem with finding it and using it. But when he has to go, he gets in it and scratches around for a bit, but then instead of going in a hole and covering it up he just goes on top of the litter and leaves it. I'm using the Tidy cat crystals and for urine its not an issue as the crystals soak it up. But for feces, without it being covered, it smells. I plan on eventually moving the litter box to my bedroom and am concerned because of this.

Is there anything I can do to teach him to cover it up or is this normal behavior and he will eventually learn to use better litter box manners?

This kitten has left mom way to early to learn litterbox behavior. It is very hard for a human to take over and teach a kitten what a mother cat does so easily. Your best teacher, would be another cat that the kitten can observe that is older and has litterbox habits. You can give this kitten a second box as well that will help. When he goes, take a stick and using the stick, cover the waste and hope he catches on.

I agree with Hissy, when I got my kitten from the humane society, he was 10 weeks old, looked more like 8 though and when he first started using the litter box here he wouldnt cover it up, and I would cover it up afterwards and in not too long he started covering it up by himself, I think he was too young to be away from the mom too, cause when I got him he had been at the humane society for a couple of weeks by looking at his record. I would just give it some time. It helped in my case.

I have a four year old cat who still doesn't cover his poop. I've learned to run in and scoop the poop because I can smell it from about a mile away. I don't think he'll ever change, it's just his way.
