ok so I have a 9yr old cat named Ginger, very loving & vocal kitty...she loves to talk, that is up until about 1-1/2 weeks ago...she can't meow I dunno what the problem is? She opens her mouth to meow & nothing comes out, sometimes a crackle will come out but that's about it. She's eating, drinking & using the potty normal so I'm not really sure what her deal is but a lady at the local pet store suggested I try a cat forum before spending all kinds of money & going to the vet. Has anyone had this problem? I've never heard of a cat losing its voice so this is pretty strange to me!!! Please help!

My cat sometimes does the "silent meow". Is your kitty not able to meow at all or is this just happening sometimes?

My kitty got laryngitis from a kitty cold, and that was her only symptom. She can get some antibiotics, or it may eventually run its course. Naturally, if she gets any sicker, I would go to the vet.

I'd keep an eye on her - if she has any other symptoms of anything, or doesn't start meowing fairly soon, I'd at least call my vet to go over the symptoms. Hope you're staying warm - I'm in Glen Ellyn, and it's cold out here!

I'm in Wheaton and it's cold here too!

One of my cats would also lose his voice, but I believe he did it for attention, because there was nothing physically wrong with him and he miraculously regained his "meow". He knew I would fuss over him which is just what he wanted.

she has never been sick at least to my knowledge...she's always meows, she meows when I come home, when she wants to play, all the time up until a week and half ago...

Huh, that's weird, especially if she's bright and perky with everything else. I'm a worrier - I bet I would be calling my vet on Friday morning just to run it by them. But, maybe it is just a bit of laryngitis - you said she's eating and drinking and using the box just like always, right?

yep, she's even playing & doing her normal "routine" so I am definitely dumbfounded...the crackle is kinda funny though, she sounds like donald duck when pepe (my kitten) tackles her & wants to play

Hiding from my SS!
My dad's cat lost his meow a month or so ago. Oni is very vocal so after about two weeks dad took him to the vet. He miraculously found his voice when put in the carrier in the car...

The vet checked him out but found no signs of infection and no fever and Oni had no other symptoms. They said he had just lost his voice - either from strain or from an infection that had run its course before my dad brought him in. The vet jokingly told dad to "enjoy the quiet."
The vet did say if it persisted or is he showed any other signs to bring him back and they would run some blood work. Oni was fine a few days later.

I probably wouldn't go to the emergency vet, but would keep an eye on her and if she starts doing anything else different call your regular vet on Friday.

thanx 4 all the good stories & advice! I think she is doing better she's half meowing & half crackling so she kinda sounds like a duck & a cat talking at the same time if that makes any sense
I did hear her meow kinda normal but than she resumed the duck noises so I definitely think she's better but I'm going to call the vet tomorrow & see what they say. Its freezing over here so I'm keeping her warm and doing lots of snuggling

Hi,

Yes, my female Judy, who is 12 years old, has lost her voice.  When I put her in the carrier, today, she regained it, but it was hoarse.  The vet checked her out, and couldn't find anything-even looked deep inside the throat.  checked the ears, and took her temp=all normal.

Now that we're home, she, once again, has lost her voice.

I cannot imagine why this is, but if it continues, I will have to submit to a blood test, I'm afraid

One of my Torties lost her voice, too. She is a "talker", constantly  talking in a loud and not so pleasant a voice. She had laryngitis, I think, which resolved in a few days. It was awfully quiet here, I must say!

Hi SeaTurtle,

Thank you for you response.  I hope that's all it is-Judy is not purring, either, and she always does.  I read that it could be a tumor in the throat, or neurological problems.  I  am hoping for the best.  Glad  your Tortie is doing better -I also have a Tortie, who has FIV.  Bot of m FIV cats live together in one room, and do very well.

Take care-where are you ? I'm in Los Angeles where we just held the Spl Olympics.

I know the last post was a couple months ago, but I'm just now finding this (as I've just now searched) -

Both of my cats have now lost their voices! First the older one did, which did not concern me at all... in fact, I was rather pleased about it. He sits at my bathroom door at 4:30am relentlessly meowing for someone to let  him in & turn the faucet on for him. He thinks he's a princess. I throw pillows at him from my bed, to no avail. Sometimes he just meows in the hallway for no apparent reason, possibly he likes the acoustics. This voice loss has been going on for a few weeks - just yesterday I noticed the younger kitty has lost her voice too. Seems like they had both been sneezing a few weeks ago, so surely it has to do with a cold. But what's concerning me a little is that they are also retching, like they have hairballs. Of course that's not unusual with cats, but it's more often than usual lately (with no results) & seems to be conjoined with the laryngitis. I'm guessing maybe the throats are a little swollen & swallowing gags them??  The bittersweet news is, the older cat is getting his voice back & letting us all know.

This site has been helpful - thanks for all the info!

Have you tried getting him a fountain? And sometimes fascination with running water is an early sign of a kidney or urinary tract issue.

My cat silent meow's at me regularly and her meow otherwise is usually tiny and quiet. She squeaks!! Unless you put her in a carrier and try to drive her somewhere, then she knows where her voice is.... I wonder if it's a different part of the vocal cord that doesn't get hoarse as easily (since it sounds like there's a lot of people whose cats suddenly find their voice in the car).
