Yesterday someone rang our doorbell. My SO and I do have occasional guests (as a matter of fact, a couple of people were here last week on Christmas Day), but we don't do a lot of entertaining at home. My point is that the cats know very well what the doorbell means, but we don't have a lot of strangers coming and going.

Anyway, when the bell rang, I happened to be standing next to the bed where one of my cats was lounging, and he growled! It really made me laugh. I have heard him do this before when we were playing with Da Bird (that toy is very, very popular in my household), and of course I've heard angry cats growling at each other. This is the first cat I've ever owned, though, to growl at a perceived threat from outside (my SO told me he growled once when a snow plow drove by our house, but I didn't believe him!). Do your cats ever do this?

(Just as an FYI: he is never actually aggressive to people. He is usually wary of, but curious about, strangers.)

They probably don't appreciate being laughed at when they're trying to be fierce and intimidating, but it's just too cute!

Trace will growl at people he doesn't know, but on the flip side, he warms up to people really quickly. Let him sniff around your ankles, then offer your hand and let him sniff your fingers, and then he'll plop right onto your lap and be almost impossible to get away from

Cindy is my growler. She growls at Fawn, when they're tussling, no surprise. But she also growls at all unidentified noises. She's my Watch Cat. I have copious evidence on my thighs of her abrupt departure from a cuddle to Watch whatever Intruder has just come in (usually Daddy
). This is always accompanied by a Fearsome Growl.

I've never heard Hennessy growl... He hisses at my parent's dog for a day or two when they meet each year....

Lestadt, on the other hand, would growl at everything when he was here...

My cat Flutterby growls at kids when they're walking to school - she watches them out the window!

She also growls when she's nursing her kittens and if there's a sudden noise

Ferris is my growler. If he even hears a car pull up out front, he growls, his hackles rise, he gets this really worried look on his face...and then he bolts downstairs to go hide under my bed.

You should have heard my Eightball growling at the vet today after he started to wake up from his surgery. I've never heard that noise out of him in 12 years.

The only cat that ever really growls at anyone is Stumpy, who is all attitude in the first place. And he growls if you try to do something with him that he doesn't want to do.

I've heard Zane growl. The first time was when two cats were having a fight outside our front door. No, I don't know who (or whose) they were. I heard a yowl that sounded odd, and when I checked Zane out I realized that the yowl was coming from outside (which was why it sounded odd) and then a second yowl came, and then the sounds of a catfight. That was when Zane started growling. My first thought was, "Back S-L-O-W-L-Y away from the cat."

sabastian started growling at people he doesnt know after a few very scarey vet visits for him, he actually tried attacking the vet a few times, they have to sedate him before working on him, so now when someone strange comes over the house and tries to pet him he will growl and hiss.

My Tomas does not like strangers, strange animals, strange situations - you get the idea. He's a bit insecure and will growl easily. Unfortunately that growl is warning and if pushed he will try to bite, as vet techs dealing with him have learned.

Both cats will growl at the mailman and any other strange people that may be wandering around the house. I don't mind this, they're just upset at their territory nearly being invaded and it's sort of funny. What are they going to do about it? Hide under the bed?

Mittens growls all the time, but not "at" people. she will growl if she is eating, and you go near her (i guess she is food aggressive?). She will also growl if you pick her up and dont put her down almost right away. She growls if she is playing with a toy and Monster wanders over in her direction, she thinks he is stealing it so she growls. I didnt know cats growled until Mittens came to live with us.

Lily growls at my parents cat when they get into fighting mode
But other then that Lily only has growled when someone was outside our house trying to steal my moms car. She made sure I knew this visitor was not welcome
I think it's because of her nothing was stolen.

Maia growls at me sometimes! She will pretty much let me do whatever to her, raspberries on the tummy, kiss her all over, but when she starts getting a little annoyed from being held to long, she lets out this low rumble growl......which is absolutely hysterical!
