I`m going to ring the vet tomorrow but does anyone have any tips on how to shift a stuck furball?

Last time this happened they just gave us furball paste which made him poorly for a day so I`ve held off using it again but he`s been coughing up a lot ( not producing anything but going through the motions of hawking one up ) the last week and since last night he`s started with the crackly breathing. He just can`t cough it up

I`ve had several attempts at disguising the paste today, but Kitty ain`t that dumb
I`m just waiting for him to doze off so I can wipe some on his paw. I don`t know what else to try

I've had to slather it on a cat's side before to get them to take the paste. They then groom it off. Will he lick butter from your finger? That might help, too.

I don`t have any butter right now

He is really mad now! I managed to get a dollop on his paw but he shot ten foot in the air and ran off so there is now paste everywhere
I`m sure some of it must have stuck....ok, he`s at the back door licking it off
There is furball paste all over my bed

If you have some petroleum jelly (Vaseline), you can spread some on his paws. It doesn't have to be in big dollops. Some cats (none of mine!) like the taste of either the commercial paste or the vaseline.

Butter or shortening will work, too.

However, if he's trying to cough it up, those pastes probably won't help. It's clumped together too large to pass through, probably. This is something you need to treat on a regular basis.

I was going to suggest Vaseline too! I had a cat when I was growing up that would chase you around the house and try to lick it off your lips! Rough cat tongue on chapped lips hurts!!!

Ok, I`m going to buy some butter and vaseline tomorrow. I thought his food had something for hairballs but apparently not. I need to find something else for him, don`t I.

I can`t see how the vets going to get it out though? Any thoughts?

Did you know I've got Persians and we've never had a furball?

We've got heaps of different furball laxative type products here in NZ so if one isn't working maybe try another one?

I think it`s called Laxapast?
I like Royal Canin
so we shall probably try that.

Funny thing is, Maisie is the medium haired one and she is fine

In the summer, Jack was hacking up between 3-4 hairballs a week as well as being sick
I started them on the Royal Canin and within a couple of weeks saw a vast improvement, so i'm keeping them on it now because i can see fur in their poop when i scoup, so it's definitely shifting it.

I would try the Laxatone as well because that's good. I used to rub it on the front of their paws really well because there would be dark brown spots on the walls otherwise

My boys eat a mix of the RC hairball formula too, mixed about 1/3 with two other dry foods and it has made a huge difference. Riley had bad hairballs all the time before and has only had 2 small ones now in the last 2 months since switching

As for the paste, when I have to give it to Xander I just open his mouth and wipe it on the back of his tongue. Then he has to swallow it and I don't end up with it all over the place.

That`s good then, I`ll have to see if anyone sells it around here tomorrow or I`ll get it on-line

He`s stopped the wheezing which is good so we held off the vets. He doesn`t seem quite right but then the last time he had the paste he was off colour for about 24 hours.

He keeps going and sleeping under the radiator in the bathroom, so if he`s not perked up tomorrow he`ll be going to get checked over.

Pets at Home don't stock the intensive furball kibbles, so i buy mine online from Zooplus. I get the really large bags because it's cheaper, and obviously delivered to your door

Bless him he does sound off colour
Lots of healthy coming for Kitty, but let us know any updates

Ah! I get paid tomorrow so I`l put some pennies in the bank and order a bag

We are definatley going to the vets tomorrow unless a miracle happens. He is wheezing again and tried unsuccessfully to cough it up again
he has also been digging in his litter tray without passing anything ( he always goes to potty outside ) and he threw up.

But he just had 'relations' with my duvet ( don`t ask, he`s a freak
) and he`s eating a fair bit of dry. Not so interested in wet

We shall see what they say tomorrow.

It`s in my phone

He`s just come to bed and the wheezing is gone again and he`s going to sleep. ( I just put my ear to him without him noticing and can`t hear any raspiness. I`ve noticed he looks quite drawn in behind his ribs when he`s standing up too. If he were a horse you`d say he was tucked up but I don`t know the equivalant for cats.

I`ll be ringing for appointment first thing.

I'm just thinking here?!. Do you usually hear any sort of wheezing from Kitty or has it just started?.

The reason i ask is because Sophie wheezes now and again. She's done it from being 1 year old so i mentioned it to the vet a couple of years ago, but she said cats have something in their throat that when their relaxed it sort of vibrates which makes it sound like a wheezing noise?.

When Sophie does it she's usually just sitting but she's tired and ready to sleep, so as soon as she lies down or something happens such as the phone rings which wakes her up it stops.
