I just want to know what others would do.

I got this part-time job doing inventory for RGIS. I put down when they asked when I could work "any time". First week- all I work is 1 day. The next week- oh my.

I have this job that's 2 hours away on Wed. Thursday I have a 4 hour job that starts at 6am. Thursday night I have a 7hr job that starts at 9pm. (that one is inventoring a major department store) Then Friday morning I have a job that starts at 6am (4hrs). So what it means is that I'm really not going to get any sleep between Thursday and Friday.

I just don't know what to do. If I tell them that I really don't want to work the Friday morning shift- they're probably going to tell me that 1) I said when I signed up for this job that I could work whenever and 2) I've already asked for a day off- so too bad- so sad, we're going to let you go.

We could use the money. My oldest has this $600 trip to Chicago with orchestra in May. My youngest has $150 worth of dance recital costume money due in January.

However- I'm also trying to get into nursing school. The reason why I asked for a day off is b/c the school I'm trying to get into has an NET review session on a Monday evening. I HAVE to pass this stupid test in order to get into the program. And I have worked my butt off on pre-requisites. And I know they're gonna have a fit when I "ditch" this job in 6 months b/c you can't work and go to nursing school at the same time.

I have this developmental math class I have to take as well. And I HAVE to pass this class as well in order to take the College Algebra class this other school (a hospital based program) wants. And they won't let me into the Fall '09 class without finishing the Algebra class (which I'm taking during the summer, before I start school in the fall). If I'm working as crazy hours as this- will I have a chance to pass this class? This week's schedule that I just got- is a week where I don't have class, that doesn't start until Jan 12.

Oh- and I didn't mention the fact that this is the 2nd shot I've got a nursing school. I was in a program. Lasted 1 semester. Had to drop out of the program b/c I didn't pass Pharmacology by 21 pts, and the rule is- the first time you fail a course, you have to drop out of the program, re-apply and then start from Fundamentals (which I passed). I had a problem with clinical hours (didn't feel like we got enough) and this hosptial program has 2x the amount of clincal/lab time, and I felt that I had a better shot at being successful at the hospital program vs the associate's program.

All I wanted was a low-stress part time job so I could help out for a couple of months.

Yikes. That's a tough one. You have a chance to pursue your dream of nursing, your children are counting on you to fund their music studies, and your work schedule is difficult. Do you think the work schedule might ease up after the holidays? How far apart are the Thursday and Friday jobs, and would it be possible to sleep in the car or have someone drive you from one job to another? Could either of your children do some fundraising (sell candy, or something) to help cover costs? (I sold so much candy in high school to cover the cost of trips, exams, you name it.) And finally, could you get by if you found a different job with maybe less pay but more regular hours? I don't envy your predicament one bit!

ODD has already had a fundraiser. We had a spaghetti dinner back in Nov. She got almost $60 from selling 8 tickets. I thought the kids were going to get anything else that was made there- but the ticket money's all she got. Kind of annoying. Then there was a fundraiser last Sat- wrapping presents at B&N. But I don't know if that went into the general fund or not.

There's a yard sale in Feb. I have 6 rubbermaid boxes of girl's clothing, sizes 6 and up. The stuff my 12 year old will fit into, and the few hand-me down junior sizes that don't yet fit my 15 year old I'll keep. But everything else is going. Hopefully that will make something.

There's money under the tree from relatives as well for the girls. But they just don't know it yet
I'm going to see how much dd is willing to put toward her trip.

The orchestra director wants ALL 150 kids (grades 9-12) to go. There's a couple that can't swing it at all, the orchestra board has set up some kind of a fund to donate toward that.

I have been looking. And as far as the Thursday job- I don't even know now if it's going to be possible. The overnight job is in one part of the city- the 6 am Friday job's in another area (like a 30 minute drive). I don't even know how possible it is to do both, and at this point- I don't think I'm going to do it. I think next week I'm just going to call and say the Friday am job isn't going to work, and if they let me go, so be it. I didn't think they'd schedule me for an overnight job AND a 6am job in the same 24 hour period.

I used to work for a company called "Western Inventory" and we did inventory in the city and travelled throughout Manitoba and Ontario. It was a blast! When we were out of town we all met at the inventory office and they drove us to the location in their vans, and if it was more than the day they put us up in a really nice hotel and paid us $20.00 per day for meals. Most of us just ate as cheap as we could and just pocketed the rest of the money instead of wasting it on food.

Anyway, that's not what you asked, hehe

I would simply talk to them. Tell them that you are in school and have a test that you need to study for.

Then clarify what hours you can work. When you say "anytime" they take that as literal. Better to be more specific and give them days of the week that you are available to work.
