The call center I work at is open from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm so the last full time shift goes in 12:30 to 9:00. We just got notification that we will be closing at 6:00pm on Christmas eve and the day after Christmas. People who are scheduled to work pass 6:00 will still be paid for their regular scheduled hours. I work 9:30 to 6:00 so this doesn't do me any good and I still have to put in 8 hours.

Now, usually Christmas eve is slow enough that they do send people home early. But if they don't, I think people who don't benefit from this should at least get comp hours they can use later. I mentioned that to my supervisor and she just laughed at me. But, I think that's fair. What do you think? (Of course, no one at the company cares what I think, and I'm not holding me breath for this...but do you think I'm being unreasonable?)

Well that just doesn't seem fair for some to get paid hours off and others not. They should have divided up the hours for the early shift like you so you would get a couple of hours paid time off too.

I've worked as a call center manager for 20+ years and have encountered similar situations. There are several options: change the work schedules for that day only to accommodate the change in hours so everyone works their normal number of hours; pay the people who work their entire shift three hours (or whatever it works out to) at time and a half or give the equivalent in comp time.
IMO, it's not equitable the way they're doing it, but it sounds like there's no one willing to listen.

What I think they should have done was equally shorten everyone's shift and compensate everyone for the time that they get off. That would seem a lil more fair to me.

It doesn't seem fair at all that some people benefit and others don't!

They should be doing what we are doing. The full timers have different shifts; 8:00-4:30, 8:30-5:00, 9:00-5:30 and 8:30-6:00 We are closing at 3pm tomorrow, so the first shift leaves at 2:00, second where I am, 2:30 and the other 2 leave at 3:00.. The last shift needs to come in at 9:00 instead 9:30 unless they opt out. If they do, they only get paid for 1 1/2 hrs instead of 2.

On the other hand, I don't know what the part timers are going to do. They don't get paid holidays and their hours are 5pm - 9pm.
