On December 20, 1983... Leigh and Robert P went to meet their new child, a daughter to be named Jessica. She showed up in a little red Christmas stocking, only 5 weeks old. They spent the day together, getting to know each other and experiencing what would be the first day of the rest of their lives.

On December 21, 1983... Leigh and Robert brought their babygirl home. Jessica Leigh P became the final piece of the puzzle in what has become the most amazing family ever. Leigh couldn't have children. She and her husband wanted a baby more than anything in the world. This day, 25 years ago, I came to them as their baby, and made the P family, well... a family.

We are celebrating our family's birthday, and I wanted to share this incredibly special time with ya'll. Mom, Dad, and I feel so fortunate to have each other, and I know that they love me with every ounce of their being. I have never known a day that they don't love me, and I'm so blessed to have these loving and amazing parents who wanted me so so badly... ups and downs, tears and laughter, they have been here for me through it all. I love them so so much... even when I'm angry with them...

That post is one of the most beautiful I have ever read. I would venture to guess your parents are equally proud to call you their daughter.

So so sweet.

I agree with that completely!

Congratulations to all of you. Your parents must be so very proud of you, and what a wonderful daughter you are

Mom, Dad, and I just listened to the tape recording of the day they met me. I found out about my birth parents, and appearantly I take after my birth mother (she talked a lot and had a good vocabulary, which is something I have worked hard on... but only because I wanted to sound smart haha... I had no idea about the vocabulary thing until today, which means my interest was biologically programmed (sp?)!) I even heard myself cry, which made me cry, and it was just amazing.

I'm going to record the tape onto a CD so I can listen to it.

I'm just in awe at my life. I came from an amzing background into the arms of the most wonderful parents a child could ever hope for.

Wow. I truly hope someday my children (all of them adopted) understand, how wonderful adoption truly is. How blessed we all are to have our family. Your parents must be so proud of you.

they will - i know my brothers do. altho they were not infant adoptions - they were 7, 10 & 11 years old at the time. my youngest brother just turned 41, & my oldest is now 45. [my middle brother was killed 21 years ago at the age of 22.]

Jessica I'm so proud of you to write this. Hope you print it out for mom and dad. I can relate - both my sister and I are adoptees too.

We have wonderful parents. Dad passed away in 1991, and mom is now in assisted living with Alzheimers, but we have a lot of good memories. My mom and dad are my REAL parents - not the ones that gave birth to me.

I'm sure you are a wonderful young lady.

Over the river and through the woods...
Honey, your post made me cry. I was adopted at 5 months old, and I honestly don't know if I ever told my parents how lucky I was to have them find me quite as well as you just did here. Definitely print this out and show it to them.

It is so sweet you have your family birthday. I had my "homecoming day"...pretty much the same thing I guess. I always loved it because it was something celebrated just in our little family.

It is SO great you have a tape of when you parents first met you. I wish I had something like that but I have stories engraved in my brain
and they are good enough. I cherish them like I'm sure you do the tape. Give your parents an extra kiss for me.

For my Expository Writing class, this past semester, I had to write a Narrative essay about a major event in my life. I wrote about my adoption from the point of view of my mom. I hope ya'll don't mind, but here's what I wrote:

The Adoption of Jessica P
\tI had wanted a child for as long as I could remember. My husband, Robert, and I had a wonderful marriage, full of love and laughter, but something was missing – the laughter of a child. We wanted to be parents, but we were never able to get pregnant.
\tWe had been to specialists, but being the late 1970s – early 1980s, there weren’t many options. After years of heartache, we decided to try adoption. We took the steps, filled out forms, had background checks, and were scrutinized to make sure we were fit to raise a baby. After hitting a few road humps and almost losing hope, the day came that I received a phone call – THE phone call.
\tI taught sixth grade at the time, and as I was leading my students through an exercise routine to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, I was called to the office for a phone call (yes, they called me at school). My heart and mind raced as walked to the office, other teachers asked me, “is it the call???”, but I didn’t know.
\tAs soon as I picked up, a female voice on the other end said, “Mrs. P, are you by yourself? We may have a little baby girl and were wondering if you and your husband would be interested in adopting her.”
\tMy mind started spinning as I got a huge smile on my face. I responded by saying, “yes! Oh my gosh, yes!”
\tAs soon as I hung up, the tears came to my eyes. Teachers and secretaries surrounded me with hugs and words of Congratulations. I immediately called my husband and asked if he was sitting down. Then I couldn’t help myself, I blurted out that we had a beautiful baby girl!
\tWe met Jessica Leigh on December 20, 1983. She was five weeks old, born November 12, 1983. Robert and I were going to spend the day with her. We went to doctor appointments and took her to buy baby supplies. We were over the moon. It was hard to return her to the case worker, but knew that tomorrow, we would bring home our daughter.
\tThe next day, December 21, 1983, Robert and I went to pick up our soon-to-be daughter. Robert was excited, and even wore a pink button-up shirt in honor of having a girl. It was an amazing feeling when the case worker walked in the room carrying a little red Christmas stocking. Puzzled, I looked at my husband, who just smiled back at me. It didn’t take long to realize that inside the stocking was our baby girl. I was crying and shaking so hard, I couldn’t hold her. So, Robert did and we marveled at her big brown eyes and bald head. She was perfect. She had ten fingers and ten toes – and she was ours.
\tWhen we returned to our house, there were pink and white balloons on our mailbox and a big bed sheet hung on the side of our house that read, “Welcome Home Jessica Leigh!” As I got out of the car, I looked up and saw a magnificent rainbow across the sky. Robert and I smiled because not only are rainbows good signs, but they are extremely rare in the winter months. As I looked at my daughter, I realized it was my father and Robert’s father, smiling down on our new family.
\tThe next few days are a blur of excitement and bonding. We spent a week with just the three of us, so that Jessica could learn who her Mommy and Daddy were. Finally, we introduced her to the world and our new life took off.
\tIt has been nearly 25 years since we received our blessing, and I am so happy to have her in my life. Yes, we have had our ups and downs, but when it comes down to it, the love our family shares has overcome all of our trials. Each year, we celebrate our Family’s Birthday on December 21st – the day our family was born. We go out together, as a family, and Robert wears the same pink shirt he wore the day we brought her home. As for the Christmas stocking, we use it every year. It is the symbol of how much we wanted a child, and how lucky we are to have her in our lives.
\tRobert and I wanted to add a child’s laughter to our already full lives, and we have been laughing ever since Jessica came into ours – usually at each other.

ETA:

After I wrote it, I showed my parents and they were impressed at what I had said. Mom was honored that I wrote it from her point of view (but, really, who's POV was I going to use? MINE?... that would have been blurs of eating, sleeping, and diaper changes!).

And yes, we do know how lucky we are... well, I know I'm lucky to have such an amazing family
