We just found a new home that is a bigger house than ours. More likely, we will move out and move into in Aug. The house has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, dining room, kitchen and livingroom. It's pretty big than what we have now. We current have kitchen, living room, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathroosm.

My dh thinks that we should put our two furry boys in our new room on the first day of the new house. It will gives them to get use it with new house for couples of days. Then They can be allowed to sniff everywehre in the house after couples of days. But i told him, i think it's nothing wrong for furry boys to arrive in the house on the first day and they will sniff everywehre at night. I have two cats, Jude isn't afraid of trying new enviroments or whatever But Tavish is a little nervous but very curious as well. Tavish likes to know where his favorite spot to be his secure. Jude does not care where.

what do you think? SHould we put our cats in our bedroom for couples of days or so in order to get use to new environment then allow them out of the room and see there are more rooms. In my opinion, it's good for them to sniff every where until they find where they want to be on the first day.

I need your opinions.. Thanks!

Wow.. sounds very nice... the new house and all.. CONGRATULATIONS !!!

My furbabies have the ENTIRE house...

When Daisy first arrived, she liked my bedroom best, after checking out the entire house.

Venus, she got a chance to check out the house as well when she first came. Funny thing, she liked my bedroom most also.

i would opt for them to check out every room -- oh yes, sniff everywhere.. teehee!

Cheers!

I'm the farthest thing from a cat expert, but when we moved with Pepper we kept him in our new bedroom for the first day while we unloaded and unpacked boxes and got somewhat settled, and then at night when we went to bed, we let him out to explore the house on his own while it was quiet. He explored all night and finally joined us in bed early in the morning to sleep!

Congrats on the house BTW!

Thank you..
that's what I thought so, Give them more options to pick where they want to be. We will see and wait till we arrives there. My dh will realize that cats will be fine..

That house builts is about 1910's but it has lots of refurbished and replaced everything such as roof, gas/oil heater, windows etc. it looks very nice..

I can't wait to see where they will pick to sit by the windows. There are too may windows. I plan to put the cat house in the hallway on the second floor near our bedroom.

I ll keep you posted in summer time.

Exaclty that's what I plan to do. i do not want them to escape when the door is open and close every time we bring boxes, packs in etc.. Until at night, i want to let them out and free at night. They will sniff everywerhe but my dh thinks cats should stay in the same room for the couples of days. I think they should be free at night when it is quiet time..

By the way, Thanks again.

you really want to keep them contained inside one room for awhile. Put familiar things in the room with them, a tee shirt with your scent on it, their toys etc. When you do open up the house to them, do it it small degrees so as not to overwhelm them. If the previous owners had pets it would be a good idea to invest in a black light and search for urine stains, so your cats don't mark old spots. Make sure you block off areas where they could explore and get stuck in, behind refrigerators, behind stove, furnaces etc...

Great! Thanks, Hissy for the tips.. I totally agree with you that i ll have to check out to make suer everything are secure. By the way, the owner does not have any dogs or cats at all. I do not smell any dogs scent or cats scents. I am surprised!! I guess the parents have 4 kids and no time to take care of dogs or cats. i think!

I will make sure to put our things that our cats do familar in our bedroom along with the hallway and on the first floor as well.

Thanks for the tips about the scent.. Oh boy wish us a lot of luck!!!!! i pray that our cats will not pee or something to make it as a trespass. Our cats had no problem when we moved in the first house two years ago where they own two dogs.. Oh boy!!

I am ready to leave for home.. ill check out this later or tomorrow to reply more!! thanks!

p.s. i ll search for the black light!!!

I think keeping them in the room where you sleep the first night is best, so they don't get nervous or overwelmed by the new place. I always put my bed and the dog crates up first, and the cat toys and stuff first, then let the cats hang out in there while I unpack. Then the cats know this is where I am going to be, so they feel safe.
Then the next day I let them out when I get up, so all the furnature is pretty much is place so there is familiar stuff all around.
I haven't moved in 5 years, but in the first 10 years with my husband we move 8 times. As long as the bed was there the cats were ok, I guess they knew that where the bed goes I go.
