Do you say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays"?

I celebrate Christmas, but I say "Happy Holidays" bc I never know who celebrates what holiday... it's generic, but sincere none-the-less.

i say Merry Christmas. since i'm not offended by "Happy Holidays", i expect others to not be offended by "Merry Christmas". of course, i don't work anywhere where an official holiday greeting policy is in effect for employees, either.

It depends. Most of the time I say "Merry Christmas" because Christmas is what I was brought up with. However on the internet I tend to say "Happy Holidays" because I know many people I interact with are not necessarily Christian and do not believe in Christmas.

Depends on who I'm around. If I'm around Jewish people (part of my family is Jewish) then I'll say "Happy Hanukkah" If I'm around my Christian friends then I'll say "Merry Christmas".

I'm not offended by Happy Holidays though, that's good to use if you don't know what holiday a person celebrates. I do however dislike it when ppl use "merry x-mas"

Over the river and through the woods...
At work, I can't say "Merry Christmas" unless the person I'm talking to says it to me first. Out and about in town I normally say Merry Christmas and of course to my family and friends since I know what holiday they celebrate.

I once got a lesson from a 7 year old girl. I was working as a waitress on Christmas eve and waited on a family. When they were leaving I wished them a Merry Christmas. The little girl stopped, turned around, looked me straight in the eye and said "we don't celebrate Christmas...we're Jewish".
He parents were obviously embarrassed but I just wished her a happy Hanauka instead and she was pleased as punch!

Its the intent, not the words

I try to remember to say "Happy Holidays", but usually slip and say "Merry Christmas", since I do celebrate the actual holiday, not the reason the holiday was invented (I'm atheist).

Neither, as I don't celebrate anything this time of year. If someone says either to me, I'll say "you too."

I say "Happy Holidays" unless the person wishes me a Merry Christmas, then I'll offer a "Merry Christmas" back. It's actually a habit I've gotten into at work since we're not really supposed to say Merry Christmas (have to be inclusive) but if someone specifies the holiday to me, I'll happily use it.

There's no place like home
My family consists of Christians, Jews, Muslims and Aethiests. I offer them "peace this time of year". For everyone else, I usually say "have a great holiday", but only when they say something first.

My husband is starting to say Happy Kwanzaa.
