Whisker Color

Moose, my DSH orange tabby, has always had a combination of black and white whiskers and now one new orange-gold one has grown in. Is whisker color determined by the same pigmentation that dictates coat color? I'm wondering where this orange one came from! He's got a lot of black hairs interspersed in the orange ones.

I have never seen a orange whisker before.
My Russian Blue mix has all blue ones though.

I've never paid much attention, most of my cats have white whiskers. Ling is black/white and has all white whiskers. Charlie is chocolate and has all white whiskers (just looked at both of them)
