Wishing I were anywhere but here
Earlier this week I found our gate to the back yard open. I had not gone in there from the front gate and neither had my dad. So I closed it. When I came home today, I found it open again. I closed it and tonight when I came home it was open again! I'm starting to get really PISSED off.
If I catch that someone is doing it, they will regret it.

I put a lock in the gate and will also put a passing chain around it. My question is, what else can I do to the gate so they will deter from doing it? I don't know if I can smear something on it, etc, that will leave their prints so I know it is a person. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions??

I don't know what to tell you. I'm assuming you live in town and someone is just being plain lazy. My granny had that problem for awhile on her farm. Some teen age boys didn't know how shut the bottom gate to our pasture because the earth moved and you have to pull on the fence to latch the gate. I guess they thought they did a good enough job, but the gate came open, my horse and 20+ sheep got loose. It really upset us because it's not their land, and they let our animals out!

My granny called the sheriff and he said the only thing we could do is put up a "no trespassing" sign and call him if we saw the person on our land. Sadly, there really isn't much anyone can do about people trespassing unless they see them. If that person, who left the gate open three times before my grandparents caught them, had been hurt by my horse it would still be OUR responsibility to pay for their injuries. Even though they were trespassing!

So don't put out any traps!!! Even though you want to

I guess your trespassers better be glad they aren't here. Where I live trespassers are lucky if someone doesn't shoot them. And numerous neighbors have met people here with a gun and demanded they get off of their land. But I guess in some places that is frowned upon. We had a guy come out here once and he was standing talking to my dad and he looked a bit odd and dad never left the guns until he left. But I don't really know what to tell you in Kentucky a fence automatically means no trespassing. I would talk to the police and maybe set up some camaras near the gate. Then again I'm just the type that would sit inside the gate with my shotgun across my lap until whoever it is came through it and I would ask them what they thought they were doing.

The latch was pretty solid when I left. When I came home, it was lifted up and the gate opened in the opposite direction. I just put the lock on tonight so I should not have it open again.
