Hey folks...

I will be making some of my own cat toys, and would like to find some sisal. Only prob, I do not know where to find it.

Can anyone tell me the names of some stores that carry it? Or types of stores that may have it?

I want to make a kitty tree thingy, and would use some carpetting and sisal. I'm leaning toward more sisal because in one article I read, it mentioned if the carpetting on the toys is similiar to the carpet in your home then your kitty may not know the difference... so a sisal scratch post/area would work great.

Thanks for any help.

Sisal is a fiber and comes in two forms: sisal rope and sisal fabric. Sisal rope is exceptionally easy to find in hardware and home improvement stores, and it is what I used to wrap a post in order to make a scratching post for my cats. They occasionally use the scratching post, but I've since discovered that Athena, who likes vertical scratching surfaces, prefers bare, untreated wood to wrapped sisal rope and that Artemis prefers horizontal scratching surfaces. When I bought the sisal rope I saw a sisal doormat. I should have bought the doormat and affixed it to a board, because that would have made an ideal scratching surface for Artemis. And if I'd left the post bare, Athena would have loved it and wouldn't have spent the large amount of effort and time wrapping the post with sisal rope. And a single doormat is cheaper than three coils of sisal rope.

The lesson from all this is make scratching surfaces (and toys) that are designed for your cat's preferences.

If you don't mind a little bit of a mess and can get downed wood, the easiest to make, cheapest and most universal scratching post (from my own intuition based on my experience above and from what others here have posted) is to affix a log securely upright to a wooden base. Or just put the log on on your floor (admittedly, messier, and probably ideal only for people with concrete floors).

I've never seen sisal fabric in person, either, but a quick google search indicates that it's easy to buy online.

Thanks for the replies. I will definately look into the doormat vs rope.... I have a couple hardware stores in town, a Home Depot not too far away too. So I should be able to find something

Thx again.

Hey...I'm a little late in the game on this one - I have seen sisel rope at Home Hardware and an empty shelf with a sisal rope label at Canadian Tire.

I looked at walmart for a mat, they had one but it wasn't sisal... all it said was natural fibers....felt like straw. I don't think that would stand up too well.

The search continues.

I will check CT next time I go, for either the rope or a mat.

Thanks for the suggestions
I'm sure Kizzy will be quite happy when I do find something and make him a kitty tree/play thingie.

I just had a wacky idea... I wonder if you could set up a loom and use sisal cord or thin sisal rope, and fashion a sisal mat that way?

My cats won't use the sisal rope so have ordered the woven sisal fabric.

Where did you find the sisal fabric for your cat scratcher? I have two tall cat scratchers that are so shredded and need new covering.

Thanks

I find that it is veeery difficult to find sisal fabric. The kind used for cat scratch posts.

Those that make the scratch posts get it sooomewheeerre. Where do they get it?

Sisal rope & twine can be got just about anywhere.

Some items that are labeled as sisal, aren't really sisal, but manmade fabrics.

There are plenty cat sites that sing all the praises about sisal fabric, but none of them (as far as I know) give any links, site names, nor suggestions where to get it. Very remiss of them. :^(

There has got to be a reputable site(s) that sells the fabric (not rugs, not doormats, not rubber-backed, not rope & twine, & not manmade fabric that's fasley labeled as sisal), at a decent price. I look on amazon, ebay, where good prices for lots of things reside --- nada.

Again, those that make the scratch posts get it sooomewheeerre. Where do they get it?

Hey Cat People,

Go to Sisal Rugs Direct at www.sissalrugs.com

They sell 10 lbs of sisal remnants for around $35.  Go to their Cat page - they also sell great cat furniture - to find remnants.  You will get several pieces of remnants of generous sizes, not tiny little pieces you can do nothing with.  I have been very have with my purchase!
