I know you can't tell for SURE, but A local breeder in town just lost her house and had 3 kittens left. So she let them go at a GREAT price. I saw the parents and the papers on the parent's but I cannot have his papers until I show proof of neuter (seem legit?)

Tell me what you think of him
He is 12 weeks old.

With those photo angles it's a little hard to tell - would like to see his profile and his tail, but he certainly looks like he's at the very least PART bengal.

Looks like a Bengal but there are many backyard breeders out there breeding Bengals that should not be bred. And that "great price" tells me it is either a poor quality one or a cross. No ethical breeder sells their Bengal kittens for a cheap good price.

And most all breeders now will not sell an unneutered kitten as a pet - he's old enough to be neutered now - the breeder SHOULD have done this before handing you the kitten.

ya I understand all of that.. Their house was in foreclosure and they had to be out this week. I think they just fell on hard times. They use to have a website www.sincitybengals.com/ but they shut it down.

I dunno...doesn't matter anyway, he is a sweetheart. guess I'll see if/when I get the papers.

He is gorgeous if he's purebred or not. I disagree also on the neutering part at 12 weeks. My vets, both Western and holistic/homeopathic will not nueter or spay until 5-6 months. The breeder for my cats and my dogs sold them to me as pets and withheld papers until I provided proof of spaying and neutering.
If she lost her house and needs to move and is in a bad situation it is understandable that she may need to lower the price on the kittens. Be sure to get a contact where she can be reached no matter what as it sounds like she will be moving. Congratulations.

Well, regardless of whether the breeder is reputable or not, it sounds as if this little guy needed you. Good thing you were there to provide a good home for him!

(He's very cute, by the way, although I can't tell you whether he's pure bengal or no.)

The problem with this is that people with ill intentions don't care if they get papers, they are not planning on being registered breeders. That's why most breeders alter before placing kittens.

Thanks everyone for your input. She seemed genuine and seemed to care about her cats (she asked for a vet reference and did do a homecheck) He will be getting neutered next month (most vets around here won't neuter before 3 pounds) so I'll see what happens.

You have a beautiful kitty. He looks Bengal to me. People are finding themselves in hard times right now with job losses and losing their homes. I am glad that this little guy was fortunate to have you in his life. It doesn't make somebody a "back yard" breeder if they lose their home.

Abby - that is true - without knowing that was the reason, it does point to more of a backyard breeder.

Twokatz - more and more vets are spaying and neutering as young as 8 weeks old (and 2 lbs). I'm more comfortable with the 3-4 months old. The problem is that many kittens are maturing earlier and can and do breed by 4 months old. By waiting you risk the female getting pregnant and if you are adopting a male/female you have to separate them as she could get pregnant by the male at a young age.

Missy is right - too many people do NOT follow thru with getting it done and then you have a pregnant kitten! So the breeders are wise to have it done before placing them at 3-4 months old.

What is your vet's reasoning of not getting them done till 6 months old?

I'm sure that is a purebred bengal. The breeder is/was a member of The International Bengal Cat Society. They owned a regional winning stud cat: SGC Savannah River Jagger

Not a well known breeder, but not a BYB either.

Just stay in contact with them so you can get your registration papers after the kitten is altered.

Most vets around here use the 3 month or 3 lb rule.

Good news! Do you have any interest in showing him once you get his papers? He is a handsome kitty.

I don't know the reason for my Vets waiting until older, it is acutally after 4 mos and before 6 mos. My main Vet is a cat specialist and I trust her, I agree with her, so I did not question. She also provides spay/neuter to a local rescue and so I am sure there are exceptions. I expect it would depend on the cat and situation. For me it has never occured to me to not spay/neuter and follow the contract I made so it is not an issue but I can see where it could be. I have read too many reports of the complications of early spay/neuter.
