Governor Blagojevich of Illinois.

The Watergate is actually an excellent hotel, with large suites exactly suited for this sort of thing. It's position in history, of course, is something else entirely.

But the President-elect doesn't move into the White House before the inauguration for very good reasons, among them security. For one thing, he's not the President yet, and while the odds are good he WILL be, things have happened before, including Presidents who became incapacitated very quickly after inauguration. And, by tradition, until he's inaugurated, the new President does not have the right to stay in the White House or otherwise be housed and supported by the American taxpayer.

I would guess that the Bushes have been moving stuff out ever since the election, since once they leave for the inauguration, by tradition they do not return to the White House.

mrblanche, this thread is not about Obama asking to move into the White House early. It is about Obama asking to move into the Blair House (guest house, traditionally used as for the President elect before the he moves into the White House) on something like January 4th (before the girls start school on the 5th) instead of January 15th. The Blair House was already scheduled for early January, so the Obamas are making alternative arrangements.

Actually, it's about both. The Blair House is also a taxpayer-supported residence, and I have no doubt that while "no room at the inn" was the public excuse, precedent was the clincher. By the way, at one time (during the Truman administration), the Blair House WAS the White House.

In this instance I'd have to agree with Enuja. Blair House is not currently the White House so what it was during the Truman administration has no bearing on Obama wanting to move into it "today". Whether or not it is a taxpayer-supported residence has little to do IMO with Obama wanting to stay close to the White House so his girls could start school on time. It makes perfect sense to me as a mother that I would like to have my children settled into school at the first of the semester rather than 2 weeks late.

IMO, this whole issue is much ado about nothing and just more Obama bashing.

Obama is the president-elect now and must abide by the rules and protocals
now. "Obama bashing", LOL, you think so? I just thought it was a tad amusing is all. We will save the bashing for when he is president and makes some boneheaded decisions, you know like Bush.

Oh, I'm certain he'll give some folks plenty of ammunition to bash him.

It just seems that some are eager to get started a little early.
