My kitten was being fed the same thing his parents were fed, Whiskas Meaty flavor
so I'm switching him over slowly to something else. I picked up a small bag of the Whiskas and a small bag of Performatrin Kitten (its the PetValu brand) and am mixing it half and half for now.

of course, I can't find it online to copy and paste

Chicken Meal, Chicken, Ground RiceFine but more and more are allergic to it , Ground Corn, Corn Gluten Mealone or the other is fine but IMHO both are not needed for UTI health in a chicken based dry , plus a touch high in the list , Chicken Fat stabalized with mixed Tocopherals and Citric Acidcan be chemically based , dried whole egg, dried beef pulpbeet pulp is a good prebiotic but the source is often ?able and often a by product reject from the feed mill, natural chicken flavorLikely being Canadian this is not as ??able as in the US where it can be nearly anything including msg , chicken liver mealIMHO organs should not be in dry food, lecithin, fish oil, salt, oat fiber, potassium chloride, DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, dried kelp, sodium tripolyphosphate, chicory root extract, yeast extract, yucca schidigera extract, tourine, dried rosemary, dried fenugreek, dried fennel, dried thyme, ground ginger, dried cayenne herbs are wonderful things just why they are included in a reg cat food is a bit ???able plus some of these are known to cause issues in certain to most cats , ascorbyl polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), iron amino acid chelate, ferrous sulfate, zinc amino acid chelate, zinc oxide, sodium selenite, vit E supplement, vit B12 supplement, copper amino acid chelate, copper sulfate, inositol, niacin, manganese amino acid chelate, manganous oxide, vit A supplement, riboflavin, d-Calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vit K activity), calcium lodate, vit D3 supplement, folic acid.

wow, thanks for the detailed response

I bought a couple cans that the lady said he liked, so far he has not been eating any of it though.

I don't have to stick wih the Perfomatrin food, I bought it because my dog is on it and does very well, so I was happy with the brand as well as since he's underweight, I thought he needed to get some kitten food so I had to grab something.

I'm reading through "tips for choosing cat food" on about.com to see what I can find out and look at the different foods available for once this runs out.

Thanks again for the response.

Would you consider buying good food online?

Check out Orijen - It is from Canada, and one of the best out there... Just a thought.

One day, I will find a food LOL

I've asked my LPS if he can get in Wellness Core, Orijen, as well as I'm going to go check out Pet Valu and see what all brands they have and do some more comparing.

The food I do decide on has to be something I can get locally. I would prefer not to order online, as the shipping usually runs high with the weights, as well as I like to support my local stores. If I can get the food at the LPS, that is what I intend on doing. I fully support the store as much as I can. He has always been great with me (I've dealt with him for years, with my fish, and reptiles) and the support he gives sure beats Walmart's... (not to mention Walmart here has a limited selected of lower grade foods)

Research sure is fun..

Sharky: how did you learn so much about food? I'm trying to do as much reading as possible, and definately have learned alot more than I did know, in the past week with reading articles, and responses on here.

I started over a decade ago
... been researching human stuff since I was 10
.... a few yrs of college and some job training( worked in the Pet food industry for five yrs

NOTE: many grain frees are too rich for many cats and kittens ... search grain free drys on here
.. the best food is the one you, kitty, your budget and kitty s tummy agree upon

My PetValu has Wellness as well as a few other higher quality foods. Check out Performatrin Ultra when you are there. I don't know much about it, but it may have better ingredients than the regular old performatrin.

On the other hand, the Performatrin (regular) wet foods are grain free and seem to be a decent quality. Cheap too, if you can buy it in the large cans.

Hi Sharky, may I ask why you avoid lamb? Is it fattening or ???

That said, I'm leaning towards Nutram, Taste of the Wild (I didn't post the info on it because it seems to be well known) and Performatrin Ultra. I haven't priced any out yet, and yes, cost is obviously going to play a part in it and I still have to look at what other brands there are.

The good news is, Kizzy is starting to eat some wet food. I found if I take his bowl away overnight, then feed him wet in the morning, he will eat most of a 3oz can. Then I free feed the food all day

Lamb is a "hot meat" it takes heat to digest and gives heat off .... this means it can cause inflammation...

Interesting. I'm going out on a limb here but.... would a meat that takes heat to digest also help keep weight in order? I'm just thinking of us humans, we have a higher metabolism when warmed up.... (increased heart rate, etc....like when I get out of the hottub)

Inflammation of the stomach I am assuming?

Is there any other "hot meats" to avoid?

Thanks again....your info is invaluable.
