We took Scooter to the vet yesterday after having cold/URI symptoms for about a week that just weren't going away. He was very lethargic and sleeping lots in secluded areas by himself (in the closet, under the beds, or behind the couch). He wasn't too interested in eating and, when he would eat, it was only a little wet food and he wouldn't touch the dry stuff. He had actually lost a bit of weight. He weighed 9 pounds at the vet, but we could feel the bones in his spine and hips more than we ever could before. He has always been a very lean cat. The vet was almost 100% certain that it was some sort of viral infection that he got from our new cat, Abby, that we adopted from the shelter a few weeks ago. For some reason, our other cat, Bailey, never got it, just Scooter. The vet put him on clavamox to take once every 12 hours. He has only had 2 doses so far, but what an improvement! He ate almost an entire can of wet food before bed last night and, just now, he actually passed up his wet food to eat some dry food (poor guy was probably finally sick of eating nothing but the wet stuff for a week straight), and he even licked almost all of the peanut butter off my toast! He still has some sniffles and sneezes, but he is eating so much more and last night he actually slept in the hallway outside of our bedroom instead of hiding somewhere. He's also much more awake now and is actually out and about in the house. He has discovered the Christmas tree.
I'm sure that he'll get even better after a couple more doses of the clavamox and get 100% back to his old self. He's due for his next dose in about an hour. I'm very happy with the progress so far!

That is great news to hear
I've been trying to pay attention to the posts about colds or respiratory infections because I think my new kitty might have one. It's good to read other peoples experiences, it helps ease my mind a bit knowing that other kitties have made it through things that my kitty may have..

Thank you for posting. I'm really glad Scooter is doing better, and by the sounds of things, he should be back to normal soon

He just had this third dose and will get his fourth around 2 in the morning. (Luckily we're night owls!). He is doing so much better already. I'm feeling so relieved knowing that he's going to be okay. I KNEW he would be fine when he stole my peanut butter this morning! The vet gave us a choice of having the clavamox in liquid or pill form, but there is no way we could get him to take a pill. The liquid is so incredibly easy to give him. We just open his mouth and squirt it right down. It's even cake flavored.

So glad to hear Scooter's doing better. There's no telling why he got the URI and your other cat didn't, but if Scooter's more easily stressed out, that might be why. Of course, there were all the other extenuating circumstances, too. Too much going on all at once may have been too overwhelming for his system. Continuing to pray he gets well soon!!

Scooter definitely does get stressed out a lot easier than Bailey. He is very shy and won't come out at all if there are other people at our house, even our best friend who is always around and even went with us when we got Scooter when he was a kitten. We have no idea why he is so incredibly shy around everyone except us. I guess that's just the way he is. He is such a sweet boy and is the only cat I have ever known who loves having his belly scratched. He was also very close to Max and I'm sure he misses him a lot as we all do. Our older cat (5), Bailey, just loves attention and will say hi to everyone who comes over and insist that they scratch his butt, LOL. I have been giving Scooter lots of one on one time and giving him special treats. He is still sneezing, but not nearly as much as before he started the antibiotic, and he doesn't sound nearly as congested. Also, his eyes look MUCH better. They don't have that sunken and puffy look anymore. He just had his fourth dose of clavamox and he went back to bed, so I'm hoping we notice an even bigger improvement tomorrow!
