I really should know this but how much should a cat be fed per day. My oldest loves to eat. Seriously. It's like a hobby of his and me being the horrible parent I am, if he cries for food I feed him.

So the other day something made me look at the feeding directions on the cat food bag and it said for a cat his size I should be feeding him 3/4ths a cup per day. Umm...I don't know if that would work. I don't feed him wet food but maybe I should?

Is the package right or should I feed him whenever he asks?

I feed him Wellness, the same as I've been feeding him since he was a kitten.

Also I heard something about canned pumpkin. What is the benefit of feeding a cat canned pumpkin?

Feed him as much as he wants that doesn't result in weight gain. My average sized, (~10 lbs), youngish (3-4 yrs) crew each would eat 1/2 c of dry per day or 6 oz of wet food per day or 4 oz of raw food per day.

That's typically recommended if a cat has medically unexplained diarrhea. It is high in fiber. There is no reason to give it if your cat has normal stools.

How is old is kitty?? current weight?? is the weight Ideal per the vet??

Most dry food bags guidelines are for Active animals ie the sun seeking curled up kitty most have should eat a bit less ..

Wet is a great thing to add

Pumpkin is as said above a item to add for diarrhea and constipation of a known origin, some foods use a touch of it as a fiber source

Elder is 4 years old. About 12lbs. Vet says weight is okay. He is a solid boy.

Younger will be 2 in June. About 7lbs. Younger doesn't eat as much as Elder. When I eat, they eat. But only bits and peices.

Thanks for the info. I'm wondering how they would react to wet food. I might try a can of Wellness and see how they react.
