My 7-month-old cat Fenway was spayed last Wednesday. She seemed to be doing great afterward until Thursday night, I noticed that her suture had opened. So I took her into the vet on Friday morning, and they put in staples to close it and gave her some Clavamox pills. Later that night, she started throwing up. I figured it was a reaction to the Clavamox, so I took her back in on Saturday, and they gave her an injection of Convenia antibiotic instead, plus some subcutaneous liquid as a precaution.

However, she continued throwing up (when she would even eat, which was very seldom and very little) and had bad diarrhea. I took her into the vet at PetSmart on Sunday, and they gave me some anti-nausea liquid and a/d food to give her. But she threw up the second dose immediately after I gave it to her; same with the third. I've also tried giving her Pepcid, but that hasn't helped either. She won't touch food now. She's going back to the vet this afternoon -- fifth visit in six days for my poor baby!

I'm terrified. If I had known the injectable antibiotic was so new, I wouldn't have had them give it to her. Now there's no way to get it out of her system until it leaves naturally, and I'm afraid that will be too late. She can't not eat that long! I'm beating myself up and feel like I've really hurt -- or worse -- a previously wonderfully healthy cat. She was just perfect, and now she's all messed up, and I worry she'll never be right again. Any suggestions at all???

Do you know if the injection has the same stuff in it as clavamox?
Coco can not have clavamox because she will throw up within minutes of getting it.
The vet told me alot of the antibiotic shots have the same stuff in them and she would be sick for days if she got the shot.
I do not use Banfield and never will.
I can not post the reasons on here.
I hope your cat feels better.
We use Baytril and Orbax for Coco.
Those are the only antibiotics that we know of that she will not throw up.
She did get a shot and and her infection was back within 3 days.
Maybe your cat was allergic to the shot or it will not work for her.

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

2 of my 5 (older) cats have had Convenia without any side effects at all, one cat has had it 3 times now (and if anyone's inclined to have side effects from an antibiotic, it's him!).

I really don't know what to suggest. Unfortunately, Convenia stays in the system for 14 days. I guess all you can do is ask the Vet on earth you're going to do for the next 14 days, to get your cat to eat and stop throwing up. It seems that vomiting, diarrhea and lack of appetite are the most common side effects of Convenia in cats - so ask the Vet how you need to proceed here, to ensure your kitty gets enough nutrition and stays hydrated.

Just curious - if you were to give your cat a favorite cat treat, would she turn her nose up at that, too? I sometimes use a treat to gauge level of appetite/nausea.

And mews, Convenia and Orbax are 2 completely different classes of antibiotics.

Thanks for the replies.
The vet gave her some fluids because she was dehydrated, checked her bloodwork (it was fine) and gave her an injected anti-nausea medicine since the oral wasn't working. If she's still throwing up tomorrow, I'm supposed to take her in to leave her there for the day to get fluids again. I'm going to go by the store to get all kinds of treats and food to try to tempt her with.

She's still throwing up, and is at the vet today for more fluids and an X-ray. Please, please, can anyone offer any advice or suggestions??? I'm freaking out.

I'm sorry you're going through this, I know it's scary and surely not what you expected, following a simple spay.

If it is the Convenia (and vomiting is the top side effect), I'm afraid it will likely just have to run it's course (for 14 days from the time she got the shot).

Maybe you should ask about them doing an abdominal ultrasound? An xray is fine, for bony structures and such....but if there's anything going on with any of her organs, only an ultrasound will show this. Can you call up the clinic and request this? Are they able to do an ultrasound there?

Has she had bloodwork done recently to see if anything's out of whack in that regard?
